I have both a Quad core and an 8 core Intel Xeon MacPro towers. My average work is only in the 2400's. What do I need to do to make Seti take advantage of all 8 and 4 cores? Does anyone have a setup for these new machines? It seems like they're being under utilized when my machines are idle.

I just looked at my Mac Pro and there is no processor setting option like there is on my G5 imac where I can set it at automatic or highest. I think the intel processors generate less heat than the old G5s did so Apple must have saw no need for that feature on the intel machines.

A few things that might limit your performance:

1) Do you leave it on all the time? To get real high RAC you need to let it run 24/7.

2) When you have BOINC manager open do you see 4 tasks running on your QUAD? If not, you might need to go to Your Preferences in BOINC manager and then look at your General Preferences to see if you are allowing BOINC to use 4 or more processors.

3) To get every last drop of time, disable your screen saver and just set the screen to go black when the computer is not in use.

4) Your computer can't go to sleep. When it does, crunching stops.

5) Using an optimized application (see the Crunchers thread) really helps. BUT, right now there seems to be problems with all the MAC applications for SETI so I don't really know what to say about applications right now.
