Just interested to know what the international coverage of the APEC meetings being held in Sydney is like.

Here in Australia it has been dominated by the massive and controversial security aimed at minimising exposure to protesters. Also the inconvenience caused by the extra security required for President Bush ie the closing of major freeways. One wonders how the people of DC cope.

Also it has been formally announced this morning that the US and Australia will share more military information and technology.

Someone posted a bulletin about this, but I have no opinion since I know nothing about it:

Hmm... Interesting reading. Though not very objective.

Every dollar a day that kid in China earns by making the shoes we buy is another dollar he is better off from before we paid him to make our shoes.

One day when that country has a developed economy and that young man can demand $10/hour to make shoes then we'll make our shoes somewhere else and he'll be unemployed.

Don't worry though cause at least there'll be a new job for him in his newly developed country.

The Western world didn't just spring up overnight. There is no overnight solution to poverty in the Undeveloped countries.

Yup. First water cannon I know of in Australia. As the article says, they've never been used here before.

Wonder how many Americans that security company employs...

Might be the first water cannon in use. But not the first time high pressure water has been used.

One time one of the Aus naval frigates docked at Brisbane and they were opened to the public. My family and I went along to have a look and they were letting people play with one of the fire hoses (very high pressure). My brother had a go. Next thing we know the ship has been washed and a few people are a bit wet. The sailor who was overseeing this display then got told off for not holding it as well. Seems that a young teenager can not handle the pressure behind it.

Now we tease him about washing naval ships.

Never surrender and never give up. In the darkest hour there is always hope.

Better than washing ship's navals. Need a really big Q-tip for that.

Comedy group’s motorcade fools security
Australian officials wave sham delegation through 2 checkpoints at summit
The Associated Press
Updated: 8:29 a.m. ET Sept 6, 2007

SYDNEY, Australia - Members of an Australian TV comedy show, one dressed as Osama bin Laden, drove through two security checkpoints Thursday before being stopped near the Sydney hotel where President Bush is staying.

The stunt embarrassed Sydney police who have imposed the tightest security measures in city history for a summit of leaders from Pacific Rim countries, including Bush.

Police arrested 11 cast and crew from the TV program, “The Chaser’s War on Everything,” and impounded three vehicles, the Australian Broadcasting Corp., which airs the show, said on its Web site.

Cast members put together a sham motorcade, hiring two motorcycles and three large cars on which they put Canadian flags. Police waved the motorcade through two checkpoints before pulling it over near the Intercontinental Hotel where Bush is staying.

Cast member Chas Licciardello got out of the car dressed in a white tunic and cap and wearing a long fake Osama bin Laden-style beard.

“No particular reason we chose Canada,” cast member Chris Taylor was quoted as saying on The Sydney Morning Herald’s Web site. “We just thought they’d be a country who the cops wouldn’t scrutinize too closely, and who feasibly would only have three cars in their motorcade — as opposed to the 20 or so gas guzzlers that Bush has brought with him.”

Bush is a frequent target of “the Chaser,” as are Australian politicians. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the stunt proved security was working.

“Whatever you think of the humor of ‘the Chaser,’ the honest truth is they were clearly not going to harm anybody in a physical way,” Downer said. “They presumably were, as is the nature of their show, aiming to humiliate a lot of well-known people.”

LOL yes. Funny political satire show. Sometimes their stunts are quite pointless but this stunt serves to illustrate the fact that all the security is mostly for show and mostly aimed at preventing large scale demonstrations from turning into riots.

Anyhow, good luck to them with their court cases. Too bad though that the ABC (a publicly funded broadcaster) will be paying their legal bills.

ABC - Australian Broadcasting Company? Kind of like PBS here in the states?
