There's been some download server starts/stops over the past 24 hours as we've been tweaking certain parameters trying to squeeze as much throughput as we can from of our current set of servers. Don't be surprised if this trend continues throughout the weekend. Meanwhile I took care of several chores. Namely we finally unhooked our old gigabit switch, which was a private network containing a subset of our servers in the closet, as opposed to our newer gigabit switch, which currently handles transactions between all the servers. The functionality of this older switch was historic and since rendered obsolete, so it was nice to finally get around to the ethernet un-plumbing and remounting of various network partitions (this explains one of the network traffic dips yesterday afternoon). I also got to permanently yank a half dozen cables out of the closet - reduction makes me happy.

Eric is back in town, so we got together with Jeff and Josh and worked back up to speed on various software projects. We all have a lot of mundane build environment cleanup ahead of us. For example converting from cvs to svn. Somebody asked why we were doing this. Well, svn is better at handling large repositories where we are frequently adding/removing whole directories full of stuff. Plus it folds in much better with various web-based tracking software suites, which will make remote user management much easier and secure. Right now we have a rather wonky setup to allow for secure anonymous downloads of the code via cvs and I really would like to put that system to rest.

If you're not getting work, restart BOINC and hit the Update button.

Post the information from your Messages tab.

Also, provide your Connection Interval and Buffer values. If you have a "global_prefs_override.xml" file in the BOINC directory, we'll need to see that also.

Maybe one of us can solve your problem.

[Edit]
It would be nice if the Default information was dislayed and then the Override information. Then we would have all of the information in one place.

I had two stuck when I got home from work about 2 hours ago. One finally went a few minutes ago and no sooner went through than I got 6 more trying to download. I'm down to only three of them still trying so just be patient, they will get there.

Does this have an effect on downloads of other files as well? I've installed the client on a second PC today, everything went smooth; but now I've been waiting for hours for two files to download:

9/1/2007 9:36:50 PM|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Started download of file setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe
9/1/2007 9:36:50 PM|SETI@home|[file_xfer] Started download of file libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll

I have restarted the client a number of times, manually retried a couple of dozen times, but still no go. I seem to have two work units waiting, but they haven't been started yet, and it appears that they won't get started until that exe and dll file have been received...

Any help?

Thanks,

Erik

What's up is SETI doesn't guarantee work for you to crunch, and you can find some other projects to work on.

You might want to take the time you spend posting your complaints to every thread you can find and instead put that effort into tuning BOINC.

If you haven't, upgrade to the latest BOINC client.

Go to "your account" and set the "connect every" interval to something between 0.1 and 1. I like 0.25.

Set "cache extra days" to 10.

Then just leave it alone. It may take a while for the cache to fill, but I'm sitting here with a weeks' worth of crunching.

Of course, the downside is that you won't have much to complain about.

Next computer you buy, make sure it comes with an on/off switch as standard equipment.
