It would help if we could see some relevant messages from the messages tab.

Yes, there have been some problems with the servers recently, but there are also other things that can go wrong.

Looks like your computer managed to download a few workunits shortly after you posted this message. Sometimes you just need to give it a bit of time.

Happy crunching! :-)

Greetings,

I'm new & probably not doing something correctly. I can't seem to connect to the SETI project server. Here are my recent messages. When I click "update" I get a message that says that communication is deferred.

Try the following to see if it works:

1) Stop BOINC.
2) from a DOS prompt type ipconfig /flushdns
3) Start BOINC.

This works in some cases.

I have also been having trouble downloading from Seti servers even though Rosetta is working fine and I can download from them.

I can see it says the servers might be down but according to the website they are not. This has been happening for about a week and then suddenly ill get a few new downloads come along and then its back to not being able to download when they are finishing.

On the transfers page I am seeing 4 items that are trying to download but they are at zero speed and they have the words "Retry in" followed by a time varying from half an hour to 3 and a half hours.

I tried several times to clear the dns like it says below but without success.
Any other ideas?

FWIW, I seem to have connected as I have the screensaver working and it says my PC has been working.

Me too now, I changed my settings in the following way and set my pc to 3 days...

Click on "Your Account" "General Peferences" "Edit Preferences" (which is near the bottom of the screen).
Then under "Network Usage" changing the item "Computer is connected to the Internet about every" to a higher figure will make Boinc think that it needs to download more work for you to do because you are fooling it into thinking it can't connect to the internet as often as it can at the moment.
This will give you more Work Units but if you set it to too high a figure your computer will be unable to complete the work by the deadline (which is normally between 7 and 10 days, although some Work Units that need to be re-done for one reason or another are required even sooner than that).
Also another thing to take into account is the fact that if your working on more than one project Boinc will still download however many days you specify under "Computer is connected to the Internet about every" FOR EACH OF THE PROJECTS!!!
This will make it even more difficult for your computer (if working on multiple projects) to complete the Work Units it would be given.
So what you need to do is work out how much work your computer is capable of and divide that by the amount of projects you are participating in, whilst also bearing in mind the amount of time your computer is turned off (if it ever is).

However I do think that this is an ongoing problem and I can imagine it reoccuring when my pc runs out of work again in 3 days time, but im hoping it will be fixed by then. :o) happy crunching, whatever planet you come from. ;o)

Deadlines are set based on the angle range, not whether or not they have been reissued. The shortest deadlines are 4.5 days, and to avoid trouble the total queue size must be kept below 4 days. To avoid a queue that occasionally empties completely "connect every x days" must be kept below 1.25 days.

I wouldn't recommend constantly hitting the 'retry' button. Every time you do, you pound the servers for request for work giving other users Denial of Service when they try to reach the servers too.

BOINC will automatically keep retrying on its own and will download work eventually.

They did fix it. They turned off the splitters so that people could get through and now the work queue has drained. Now people are getting "no work from project" messages.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other. They are working on a more permanent solution according to Matt's latest update.

There are currently seven tapes in the splitter queue, all from 2000.

The WU's that I have seen has been dating back to not earlier than 1999.
Perhaps WU's dating to a later year (2000-2007, one or more of them) has not been seen by my PC as well. Are there WU's from before 1999 that has not been
crunched by Seti@Home Enhanced (or older versions) ?

SETI@Home started in 1999 (well, 1998, but that's mostly irrelevant), so the oldest tapes will be from around then. A lot of these older tapes have either never been crunched or were deemed "too noisy" to be crunched by the original SETI@Home application, but can be crunched by the new SETI@Home Enhanced app.

Workunits from 2007 have started showing up on many people's computers for those that have the new science app that can processes multibeam WUs. Many of my systems have had plenty of MultiBeam WUs to crunch since they rolled them out roughly three weeks ago.
