As S@H is international & (hopefully) we are all human - we tend to make mistakes every so often.

The wisest amongst us tend to never make the same mistake twice.

Let us not forget that moderators are human too & can, do make mistakes. However, there are times that every human makes a mistake & refuses to accept the fact that they are wrong. This only tends to aggrevate the situation.

What is a required is an Arbitrator whose decision is final - with no further comments/posts allowed.

The Arbitrator must be unbiased & honest. Surely, there is plenty of people out there with these traits.

Your comments please.

I volunteer. As long as it also comes with the ability to get rid of any idiot moderators that have or may come our way.

Oh no, Mike, that would mean the project would lose face and we can't have that, can we?

shouldn't moderators be kind of arbitrators themselves?

Well, I also volunteer :)

It was my original understanding that on a forum such as this, the two terms were to be virtually synonymous. (Rush, any objections to the theoretical idea?)
I do not volunteer.

Eh, it is the level of control (and the emotional incompetence often demonstrated) that causes most of the problems here. Adding further (and inviolate) levels of control likely just exacerbates the problem.

As I've said before, those of you that use the red x have created the problem, because by your actions you want control brought down on others. You got what you wanted (Mac put under control), so you should be thrilled.

Instead of realizing that Mac probably had a bad day, there were any number of you out there red x'ing away. You know, to save the rest of us and to make sure the Post was Closed for Further Review.

You know, because that helps save the internet for the Restivus.

As I am a forum administrator myself, I have to say that moderators are arbitrators only in theory. In practice however, many moderators tend to play with their "power", most often not realizing their own mistakes.
I have implemented several ways of arbitration in my own forum, but they, too, are not perfect, since arbiters also make mistakes and arbitration is quite difficult on a scale like this. It works pretty well at my forum (where I usually handle arbitration), but it is of much smaller size.

I can, however, imagine, that important moderator decisions (e.g. bans) be discussed publicly before they are applied.

I'd probably volunteer, but I think I'm not yet very familiar with these boards and its users and, to tell the truth, I'm also a little bit reluctant to use the English language.

I understood everything you said here. I also just read your profile. Again, I understood everything. Furthermore, reading somewhat quickly, I do not see any errors in either place. So, maybe you do not need to be so reluctant? We have several moderators from countries where English is not the primary language. If this has helped ease your reluctance some, would you really be willing to offer your services by joining the moderator team? (Note: you will need to have enough time.)

Well, I actually know that my English isn't bad, but I'm in constant fear of saying something that I didn't intend to say... That happens quite frequently to me, even in my native language...

Unfortunately, I think that I don't have the time for moderating a forum (anymore). Maybe, I will even have to give up my own forum soon.

Understood. If you change your mind, tell us and we'll let you know how to contact an administrator for offering your services.

No ... the forum associated with the project might. Once again, the strong links between the project and the forums many of us, or the public that reads but does not crunch or post, make are just that: too strong.

I worked in an abattoir as a student for my summer holiday pocket money once, so I'm a qualified volunteer. I think I maybe pressed the red x twice in my whole time on all the BOINC boards, and still the bomb didn't go off.

Appointment of staff is up to Eric Korpela. I'd rather he concentrate on appointing appropriate moderators that hiding that problem with the concept of an arbitrator.

Well, if you think twice, you will realize that it's possible to see it that way, that even this is politics: the politics of interaction between persons on an Internet message board ;)

Welcome Back Dogbytes. Hope you are well.

I could not find any info as to where certain topics should be discussed, so entered the Cafe Seti as I was unaware that this matter was political.

Ah Well...You live & learn!

I beg your pardon, Michael, but this thread is all about moderation policy. What do you think these proposed "arbitrators" would be arbitrating? The initial post in the thread points out that moderators can make mistakes (I certainly agree), thus Mr. Daly seems to think that [an additional number of] arbitrators are required (but as for that, I do not agree).
