It's a rough place no doubt about it. But anyone who thinks that the coalition presence there is doing more harm than good is too easily swayed by negative media. The media has to be negative cause scandal sells. Good news makes you feel good and proud but it just doesn't sell quite so well.

Sorry, but they had water and electricity before we arrived on the scene... Now they do not...

But I thought the idea was to make us all feel like we need to be there? Isn't that the role of the media in this whole NEW WORLD ORDER scheme? Or is that just a load of cowchips too.

But we aren't fixing what we broke. We're just marching in place for the most part. Sure we go in and clean out a few rat nests but as soon as we pull back to the Green Zone, the rats move back in.

Wonder why when designing the Government/Constitution of Iraq they didn't establish a unitary style of Parliament to be made of members democratically elected to represent their religion and with equal representation of Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds. Instead of electing the candidate for your region you elect the candidate of your preferred religion.

That way no one religion could dominate the other. Also it eliminates the problems associated with two-party politics.

Sure it wouldnt be a true democracy but it could at least be a stable one.

The longer we maintain instability, the longer we can supposedly justify being there.

George Galloway's speech to Parliament, January 2007

The government that governs best is the government that governs least, and by this standard we have set up a wonderful government in Iraq, Lebanon, etc...

Anti-war hero George Galloway giving the US Senate a bollocking.

Maybe you've forgotten the biggest issue... They can't seem to get along with each other... ;)

I'm aware of that. Though I believe that part of the problem stems from one having power over the other. Where before it was the minority over the majority, now it is the majority over the minority. Either way they are still going to fight and kill each other.

If they have equal power though and are forced to make policies which are agreeable to at least two of the three religions then the the country might be seen as more fair for all Iraqis.

Just occurs to me that there seems to be no national identity for Iraqis. What does it mean to be an Iragi? What values and traditions does an Iraqi hold? Mostly it seems dependant on their religious beliefs and thus there is no Iraq but instead three different intermingled nations.

Perhaps efforts could be made to determine common elements of Iraqui life and build a national identity which is inclusive of all Iraquis. Build some national pride which is not reliant on religious beliefs such as seen by the success of the Iraq soccer team in the Asian cup.

Electrical output in Iraq is the highest it's ever been in history, Jeffey. And it has been the highest in history for years now. Old news.

Of course, now that the people are free and most are earning a better living than before they can afford to purchase more appliances and previously banned things like satellite dishes which drives the demand for power up. I suppose we shouldn't allow them to advance into the 21st century along with the rest of us.......that's the humanitarian thing to do I'm sure.

The Shiites and the Sunnis have been killing each other for almost 1000 years. That doesn't stop overnight. Take the example of Ireland. We only now are seeing a sort of calm and that took quite some time to achieve.

The Kurds are not a religion but a group of people that have been trying to form their own country for some time now.

There will never be a stable government in Iraq unless it is a theocracy controlled by one of the two major branches of Islam.

I guess the killing squads and the suicide bombers are part of this whole advance into the 21st century. Maybe having fewer people around to drive the demand for power will allow more freedom and better living.

Sorry, I guess sarcasm doesn't translate very well. The current policies of the United States government are encouraging the killing squads and the suicide bombers. We keep insisting on a unified Iraq. The only way Iraq will ever be unified is if we bring back someone like Saddam or one of the two, Sunni or Shia, wipes the other out.
