I just started using BOINC for Seti@home... I know about getting credit for work I have done, but are the credits good for anything, except for showing how much work you have done?

Credits are just an abstract reward awarded to measure your contribution to the projects. You can't do anything practical with them.

You can brag about your performance, use it to compare your performance relative to other crunchers or check the performance of your pc.
