It's interesting to see what's been done with materials only a few atoms big. Have electron microscopes gotten better in the last 30 or 40 years? The last time I've heard their best resolution was about one to two nanometers, and that was possibly three decades ago. It seems like by now pictures should be showing individual atoms clearly. I haven't seen any. I understand atoms are about 0.2 to 0.3 nanometers across, but I don't know if they get larger (or just denser) as their atomic weight rises.

I'm glad you asked Clyde. I recently read a paper from a group in Japan that had images of individual C60 molecules. While they were a bit fuzzy, you could easily count each atom in the molecule.

Thanks for the links. I will read the task force report in greater detail later but just from a quick skim, it looks like the FDA has a good start on regulatory issues facing nanomaterials. As a researcher in a relatively new field, I am constantly aware that the need for caution in dealing with unknown qualities is a must. To paraphrase a recent public official- There are things that we know and there are thing that we know we don't know but there are things that we don't know that we don't know.
