Hm, I'd expect - if there are any aliens watching earth - that they won't contact us. It would be too dangerous if their tech would fall in our hands - we would for sure find a reason to fight, enslave or kill them. Our politicians are animals and a species, wo managed to survive the possible point of self destruction is probably ethically far advanced and therefore in a large disadvantage compared to us.
Come to California and we'll have a BBQ.

You should be more concerned with how human's taste than them dropping a "ray-gun" in someone's backyard.
Hehe, maybe I should, but it's rather unlikely a advanced alien race will be mainly interested in our taste.
We don't know what they look like and what metabolism they have. Most aliens in SciFi are just a copy of terrestic lifeforms. But no one knows how an intelligent lifeform will look like if it evolves in different environment. Probably it will differ a lot and we can't imagine their looks in our wildest dreams.
A advanced civilization which manages to travel space will have a high level of tech. As you can see such technology also carries the risk of self destruction. There is a sufficient level of ethics needed to handle this advanced tech while we are still to a good degree barbarians.
