Did we lose the credit for work done in the recent crisis?

Just wondering because I did a lot of work returned over times when you could UPLOAD but couldnt DOWNLOAD that I didnt see any corresponding credit for. I know SOMEONE will say "it needs 3 others" etc and yes I know that but as I said, I did a LOT and I sincerely doubt the credit I got even goes REMOTELY close to what was sent back in. So, I wondered about how that could happen that isnt as obvious as the validator being offline and it occurred to me that over the time the troubles were in full swing, it was possible that returned work was simply lost, none of it from anyone actually processed. I understand there must be some form of checking for this in there so I wonder if someone might be kind enough to check because it may save a lot of time in there, too. Oh and for anyone who is going to get upset because I raised this issue, I wasnt getting pissed, I was just raising a valid possibility. Eg, what if there ARE a whole bunch of work units returned, sitting and waiting and not having anything done with them? Greg. |

Hi Gregh, With the way that credits are rolling out right now, I personally do not believ any were lost. If there were it was propably a minute amount. They were like 93000 credits behind when the Validator was restarted, so if they are finished catching up on those, they begin the recent credits. Regards, Rocky Cudd |

I think I agree with Rocky. I was initially thinking that I should have received more credits than I have so far, but after taking a good look at them I think it really does seem to account for most of the work i have done lately, and I'm sure the validator isn't caught up yet so there are more to come. For me, it appears that none have been lost. Good news. |

Hey Bfarrant, If I remember correctly, reading in one of these posts some time ago from Rom, that the Validator works somewhere around 2000 WU's an hour, well at 93000 behind Thats almost 2 days alone nonstop validating the past WU's. The more and more I go back to the credits, they are increasing very gradually, so they are probably caught up now. If they were 93 K behind, the current work was probably equal to the orignal 93k or there abouts. Have A Great Day and A Better Tomorrow! Warm Regards, Rocky Cudd |

If we look at BOINC as a science/engineering project, and not a way to satisfy an insatiable appetite for basically meaningless "credits" it is a fascinating question. If you were fortunate to get into LHC, they are running the "pending credits" function there -- it'll be interesting to see if they can keep it going when they go from 1,000 to 50,000 users. One of my "pending" units has been assigned to five crunchers. Three have "errored out" in one way or another, and it is pending assignment to a sixth cruncher. It hasn't been assigned or downloaded, so it may be a while before I see credit for that particular work unit. I've got a couple like that over there. I've seen other threads where people are detaching and attaching from SETI, and I think that intentionally dumps work. If one of the other two users dumped their work, it might be a while before a scheduler reassigns that work unit. I'm sure some have moved to other projects and are not running SETI: if you are paired with one of those, it'll be a while before the third result is returned. ... or, the other crunchers could be slow machines, like one of mine that needs 8 hours to do one SETI work-unit (it isn't running LHC). It looks like mine are showing up as the validators crunch through the backlog. |

I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes when they open it up for those 50,000 users too. So far I'm really enjoying LHC, and quite impressed by how they are handling things - but wow - that's going to be a whole different scenario for them. |

I think that we are still about 24 hours from being caught up from the back log. I estimated that time based on the post that was made by Rom below. I have had about 3000 credits added since the validator was turned back on and still am adding more at a faster pace than would be normal for my current production. >Posted: 11 Sep 2004 2:38:14 UTC >There are roughly 97399 workunits pending validation. >We are chewing through them at about 4000 an hour with an incoming rate of about >2000 an hour. >So its going to be awhile before we get through them all. >----- Rom >BOINC Development Team, U.C. Hi! Rom said: new WUs are comming 2000/hour, 97399 waiting. They were comming with 2000 WU/hour before, so it is two days work. I guess old validator successfully erased all pending work done before September 7th. It might be a bit more if there were 97399 different WUs waiting? I hope WUs are lost for crediting, not to science. BR Iztok |

As I indicated in an another thread ... I have gotten credit for WU's sent in prior to the 4.05 upgrade ... I suspect there are a lot of old WU's being credited. EdwardPF |
