The BOINC owner's manual says 'undefined'

A PC can be configured to be used at home, at work or at school. This configuration is available under "Your account", "Preferences" - "General".

If the PC you are working on is at home, when you connect to the server for example to do an "Update", you will get that message, even if you use only 1 PC. When an update is made, the preferences set on the server for your PC will be transfered from that server to your PC and your PC will choose afterwards the settings as you have difined them.

When Boinc is started, Boinc will look for these settings that have been saved in a file on the PC.
