Sorry about the lack of tech news lately. It's been a crazy month for me (and others). Right after returning from Portland last week I worked one day here at the lab then got back on the road to head to southern California for a few days. It's hot down there. So I covered well over 1000 miles of Interstate Highway 5 over the past week or so. 2000 miles if you count both ways.

Anyway.. all weekend there were some issues with the backend that didn't stop work creation/distribution, but caused other headaches. Namely some queues filled up, the server status page got locked up, and one of the splitters was clogged. I pretty much stopped and restarted everything and that cleared all the pipes. There's still some residual issues with the backlogged queues and whatnot. Hopefully this will all push through after we compress the databases tomorrow during the usual outage.

Eric and I will try to release the multibeam-enabled client very soon. Like this week. Yes, this is big news, and we'll publish some press release as we progress.

I5 is a very neat drive. Never driven it south, but took it north from the Bay area north to the border.

Awesome news about Multi-Beam!! Thanks for the update Matt.

Matt --

With all that driving, and the cost of fuel well over $3.00/gal, I hope your vehicle is very, very efficient....

@ KB7RZF: you haven't driven I-5 between I-580 and San Diego (South from SF)... it is deadly boring, (in my experience – especially from I-580 to the Grapevine [the pass between Bakersfield and the Los Angeles basin for non-Califonians out there...]) at best, and dangerously foggy (same streach) in the winter. (that's when you get at least one 40-100 vehicle pile-up a year...) I try to drive it at night, getting into the LA basin at 0800. (on a Sunday!) I then continue on to San Diego... (after breakfast!) I've driven it too many times to count in a car, and even once in a big-rig (semi) truck. (Northbound only, from somewhat north of the Grapevine to SF.)

@ Matt... Another thing to watch for is the client connections script... it isn't working, currently. That's good news about multi-beam though. How many "tapes" are backlogged?

I5: as stated already - it's beautiful to the north (once you get past Red Bluff) and boring (and hot and SMELLY) to the south. I had a Prius for the Portland weekend (almost 50 mpg - yay!), but rode in a van (with four bandmates) for the southern journey (about 13 mpg - ouch!). Got a blowout right at the top of the Grapevine. Not fun.

Multibeam data - we have roughly 3-4 terabytes ready to split on disk (more or less equivalent to 60 classic data tapes), and much more in remote storage. So they'll be no shortage of data to chew on - that is until we get our half million active users back.

Hi!

As we might get again into old-new RAC stories: would it be possible to add
client version as priority in validator?

As it was nicely said by Jim-R in "Number crunching : Claiming Differences" thread:

I believe this should read simply if version a and b are 5.2.6 and above, grant the lowest claimed credit. If either a or b is 5.2.5 or lower, grant the claim of the version 5.2.6 or up. If neither is 5.2.6 or above, take highest claim.
Or in the last case and a third result is out, wait until it is back before granting.

13MPG for a van carring 5 people and gear is not that bad. It works out to 65 Miles per person gallon. This does not include the instruments and amplifiers and such that I am certain were also in the van. Vans and busses have their place.
