Message 25101 - Posted: 11 Sep 2004, 13:44:55 UTC

having loaded the BOINC version of SETI the rate at which my PC is getting through work units seems to have dropped dramatically.

The CPU usage seems the same as before and the CPU time to crunch a unit seems the same as before. It seems as if something's stopping BOINC from crunching for extended periods when I'm not looking. I think what may be the problem is that BOINC's not running when the (secure) screen saver is on, there's certainly a message saying it can't /display/ the screen saver.

Anyone confirm or refute this?

Any workarounds?

If you have an old graphics card or one which doesn't fully
support Open GL then when the screen saver is active, your
CPU load will be very high. If the load gets high enough,
all of the CPU's power will be used to generate the graphics
instead of crunching WUs. To solve this problem, DISABLE the
screen saver. Goto CONTROL PANEL, DISPLAY PROPERTIES, SCREEN
SAVER, select NONE.

I don't think that's the cause as the problem is there with screen saver set to "blank screen" (which was OK with old SETI)

I just upgraded from BOINC v4.05 to v4.08 and I've just noticed this as well. Once the screen saver launches, BOINC stops crunching for a few minutes. It does eventually start crunching again.

What is your setting for Do work while computer is in use?.
If the answer is "NO", this will stop crunching as your screensaver is active.

Or I am wrong?

It seems to be more than just a few minutes, all but no progress when the (blank screen) screen saver is active.

OK.!

Secure windows desktop detected.

You will need to go to the setting of the screensaver and uncheck either password or welcome screen, depending on the OS.

This should fix the problem.

So it not only disables the /display/ but the actual SETI engine also stops running?
