Message 606900 - Posted: 21 Jul 2007, 9:45:22 UTC

My PC is running all night and now I see a workunit at 83% but stopped. Boinc is saying "Holding , user is active" - in German: "Angehalten, Benutzer ist aktiv" - I have no option to start it again.
Has someone an idea what this means and how to get it running again?
Otherwise this program is of no use.
Thanks

I now aborted the work unit and restarted my PC and now Boinc is running again. Still this is a strange thing. Anyhow it solved the problem.

When any message states something like "Holding, user is active", it means that you have your preferences set to "Do work while computer is in use: No", meaning that no science will be done while you are using the computer. Or it has to do with available memory, such as not using more than 50% of memory while computer is in use (so if you have 1GB of RAM and while you're using it you are using 600MB of RAM, then the app will wait for more RAM to become availabe).

The only way to make it start up again is to either a) have your computer do work while computer is in use, b) stop using your computer so the science can complete or c) increase the allowed RAM usage.

Looking at your messages will tell specifically if it's due to user activity or not enough RAM.

Hi,
my PC: AthlonXP 2600+, 1GB Ram, Win XP
settings: work while computer is in use-yes,
use at most-10GB,
leave 1GB free,
use at most 70% of RAM when PC in use, (increased from 50% after your posting)
use at most 90% when PC is idle,

Now I uninstalled BOINC and reinstalled but the preferences will stay the same but SETI is running again. Is there any possibility to set all settings back to default to compare and to adjust accordingly?
I also had the problem that I couldn't connect to the website the last 3 days. Sounds like a server is down, maybe that can also be a reason.

Anyway, Thanks for the ideas

I'm willing to bet it was the RAM setting. You can always change it back to 50% to see if it happens again.

And yes, the servers were down for the last day. It might be a short while before they catch up.
