Message 602679 - Posted: 13 Jul 2007, 6:15:56 UTC - in response to Message 602672.

Is there a way to kill file an entire board?

Do we really need twenty political threads???

Just add all the posts up in the series and think of it as one long thread. ;)

I'm sure there is, but it is easier to simply not open a thread/forum in which you have no interest.

Looking at the news nightly I agree with the new forum section.

Stick around and I guarantee you will learn something important.

No - we really don't.

If I want lots of links to sh*te YouTube clips, I'll go to YouTube instead...

Solution:

Don't click the "Politics" link.

Participation not required.

Yes we do need this forum, with all it's multiple threads.

As has already been said ... If a poster has no interest then ignore it.

Complaining about having the thread is as bad as saying there is nothing worth watching on TV. The equipment has an ON/OFF switch. Turn it off and there is no need to complsin!
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues

The problem with a general "politics" forum on a GLOBAL message board should be obvious......

It's not so obvious to me. What if some French or Thai users want to open a thread discussing their own politics? If the posts are in a language I can understand, I would probably look in. And if the Political Thread series (which is mostly but not exclusively about American politics), is of interest to anyone of any nationality, then can, and do, look in and participate.

I'm assuming that you mean people from other countries will use it to attack American politics.

Yes, it makes it much harder to sweep the dirt under the carpet, and keep it there... ;)

A French and a Thai user discussing each other's politics is fine and dandy.....Exactly where is that topic or anyone remotely as mild?

As far as "attacking" American politics, I think it's much simpler than that and really boils down to knowledge. Reading the NY Times is a lot different than living in New York City and no amount of creditable/news worthy resources/history/research will change that.

I'm not advocating a removal or anything, excuse me if that was the perception.

Just stating an opinion here.

Like knowing, understanding, and defending the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution? ;)

The US Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution do not apply to non-Americans and if you don't "understand" that very basic point, then you certainly can't "defend" either document.

The term 'Politics' applies to much much more than just government.

As the Wikipedia puts it:

Politics is the process by which groups of people make decisions. David Easton describes politics as "the authoritative allocation of values for a society". Although the term is generally applied to behavior within governments, politics is observed in all human group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions.

Politics consists of "social relations involving authority or power" and refers to the regulation of a political unit, and to the methods and tactics used to formulate and apply policy.

Political science (also political studies) is the study of political behavior and examines the acquisition and application of power. Related areas of study include political philosophy, which seeks a rationale for politics and an ethic of public behavior, and public administration, which examines the practices of governance.

My personal definition of Politics is "the interaction of people in groups, both within that group and with other groups."

Yes, any discussion of national partisan politics belongs here, though I hope that people won't get too carried away with it. It tends to bore many people.

Of course, a more general discussion of Political Science belongs here, as do discussions of Political Philosophy. Discussions of Public Administration belong here as well. Discussions of how various governments around the world operate, why governments should (or should not) do certain things, and various other issues of importance to humanity as a whole can be quite educational for us all.

As an admin pointed out, Religion fits here too. Since religion is a form of political behavior, in my opinion, Religion has its best fit here.

Also, since the posters on this forum form a 'group', discussion of Moderation Process and Policy fits here too, as long as all of us can keep it civil and avoid losing our tempers. Note that discussion of Specific Instances of Moderation is still not allowed, here or anywhere else on these forums, per the Admin's policy.

The reason why, in my opinion, this Politics forum is a good idea is that many people have either no interest in political subjects or are greatly interested and have strong feelings about at least some of the subjects. Tempers can, at times, flare during political discussions, and the rhetoric can become quite heated.

Putting the political topics here allows the general socializing in the Cafe to continue without interruption from either 'boring political topics' or 'accidental pie fights stemming from a debate on "the Whichness of Why vs. the Whyness of Which"'.

Islam and the Qur'an do not apply to non-Muslims and if you don't "understand" that very basic point, then you certainly can't "criticize" either of them.

But but but... didn't you just say:

Interesting analogy though... eh? ;)

What a coincidence....I don't care what Islam or the Qur'an preach. My homeland was attacked by middle eastern terrorists, they specifically targeted civilian locations in order to maximize civilian damage and casualities and I don't really care what what BS excuse they use to justify that type of aggression.

And here we uncover the first flaw in your thinking process:

This isn't YOUR country, this is OUR country... And WE don't all believe as YOU do... ;)
