By it’s nature, SETI can’t help but be political. If you don’t believe me, just wait ‘till a signal is discovered. The political (and religious) fallout from that will make most of the issues of today pale in comparison.

At least the other forums have a connection to the project. Many of the discussions in the Cafe somewhat involve politics, and the issues somewhat obviously overflowed the single 'political thread' kept open. The new politics board gives a place for those threads, so the general socializing in the Cafe need not be interrupted by heated political discourse on various hot-button issues. If the political threads were all put here, then those without interest in this sort of subject can just not open the board. I think it is a good thing. ____________ AMD Athlon II X3-450

@ Major Kong It would either mark the end of civilization or it’s beginning. Either way, it’ll be political. Wanna place a wager on which it will wind up being?? lol @ Luke And aren't we supposed to be looking for SETI? Not talking about politics Actually, we know where Seti is. It's the E.T.'s that we are looking for. My question to you is this. Just because we are using our computer to crunch data for Seti...does that mean that we should completely ignore the world around us?? ____________ Air Cold, the blade stops; from silent stone, Death is preordained Calm Chaos Forums : Everyone Welcome

.....just wait ‘till a signal is discovered. The political (and religious) fallout from that will make most of the issues of today pale in comparison. The discovery will be suppressed. Those that have truly guided humanity for many decades will continue to do so. :D ____________

I totally agree with kenzie and Knightmare. I'm glad that there is now an extra forum for politics here. This is the chance to raise discussions about politics from pub level to serious discourses. To open a new "Political Thread" in the Café every couple weeks, with a mix-up of all political topics plus some fun remarks is just more difficult than to take discussion about politics seriously AFAIK there's no thing like being non-political. Even to shut up and ignore everything else than SETI is a political statement. ____________ Account frozen...

In the normal case, either the thread starter can request a move or the majority of the posters in a thread would need to agree and request it. Since that monster thread under discussion has had so many posts/posters in it, I would think that it should be left up to the thread starter to make the request. However, since the thread starter is also a moderator, the thread starter can do the move themselves, should they so desire. That said, this entire board (Politics) is kind of a 'Political Thread'. The 'Political Thread' came about as a way to segregate political postings from the rest of the cafe. This board (Politics) now exists to perform that exact function. If you or anyone else wishes to start a discussion thread on a particular political topic here, please go ahead and do so.

The reason for the new political board of the forum is that it's intended to now be the place for the discussion of political issues, and the purpose of a political thread is to discuss political issues, which is of course what goes on. What's the difference between that, and a comedy thread in the science or number crunching boards? If you or anyone else wishes to start a discussion thread on a particular political topic here, please go ahead and do so. Thank you. :) EDIT: Forgot to add. I think the new boards are a good idea. The admins and mods are just going to be going through more threads than they did before. SECOND EDIT: Forgot to provide an explanation on why I think the new boards are a good idea. In the case of the political board, well, it might help in keeping some of the intensity often generated in threads that have political topics from spilling over to the rest of the cafe. Sorry about the multiple edits, I'm juggling a couple of programs on my puter. ____________

I certainly like it. This forum has hosted some pretty hot political debates with opinions from a broad spectrum of posters.

Hard science is indeed interlinked to the social sciences. There are social and political ramifications when new scientific discoveries are made. Think about it,... suppose that one day SETI got absolute confirmation, and followed its protocols for revealing its discoveries to the world (which by the way, such protocols were in part due to the efforts of a certain U.S. diplomat and other social scientists)... how would we as humans deal with it? Not all humans are as excited about the prospects of such a discovery as SETI aficionados are. Social scientists, such as myself, would be left to pick up the pieces and help people to cope with the news. That is also YOUR responsibility as well, since all of you are active participants in this project, and since all of you are equal members of humanity. Humans react differently to psychological stimuli. As a member of SETI, you might welcome the news. Others would be shaken to their very core foundations. People's very perceptions on how we see ourselves in the grand concept of life would be completely altered suddenly and abruptly; we would look at everything, every aspects of our lives, everything that we have come to have known and will know with questions. It is one thing to think that the Drake equation must be right, and that intelligent extraterrestrial life is out their. It is quite another thing to have the cold reality of it staring you in the face, and to know for certain of something. Hopefully humans would in time come to look at the universe with optimism. That is why this political forum is so important. It deserves the honor and respect as a diciplined field of study, contributing to the SETI aims. It deserves its own unique and idependent forum.

I had some mixed feelings about making a separate forum as I don't see politics as a discrete entity. On the other hand if we can have a discourse without feeling the need to make personal attacks on each other, which seems to be the culture of the Cafe, then I think it could be a good thing.

Do we really need a political forum?? Do we really need twenty political threads??? Geez, that was an eye opener... ;) (methinks we need a 'special place' for the achieves) ____________ It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . .

El tiempo da buen consejo (Time will tell). After a while the moderators can see if a political forum maintains its size while maintaining its relevance. If it gets too big it can be subdivided. If it gets too small it can be joined with another forum. If irrelevant material invades, it can be transferred to another forum.
