Message 568642 - Posted: 16 May 2007, 15:51:30 UTC - in response to Message 568635.

I wanted to ask if leaving the Network Communication from my computer to the Seti server on, would that cause any kind of trouble with work units trying to upload/ download?

I have had it in the past where i have had client errors on WUs because they can't connect or partially connect then disconnect when reporting/ uploading/ downloading!

Sorry if this has been covered already!

:o)

Put it at "No new work" untill you have crunched out your WUs and then turn it to "Suspend". If you want to go cold-turkey you turn it into "Suspend" emediately.

Hey, bit a newb here. Seti is trying to upload all it's WU to the server, and it seems to be causing my servers to kinda stop working. Why, I don' know... Anyway, can I detach from the project and not lose all the WU that are completed.?

Don't detach, that would lose any credits or completed WU's that you had coming... either hit the "suspend" button on the "projects" tab, or hit the "no new work" on that same tab...

Berkeley is gradually filling downloads from a 2 week outage, and having miscellanious other problems, associated with the sudden overload of about 700k computers asking for work!

Message 568650 - Posted: 16 May 2007, 15:59:31 UTC - in response to Message 568404.

Is there a way to send the results? I don't care about the credits, but some of the results will expire tomorrow.

I don't know about you guys, but I am wondering about, when i open setiathome pages, I end up with 2 windows open, does anyonme else have this problem, and could it be related to upload problems ????

Depends how you open the pages. There have been reports that:

If you open the pages using the buttons in the BOINC manager,
and you're using BOINC v5.8.15 or BOINC v5.8.16
and your default browser in Windows is Internet Explorer 6

then you get two browser windows open. It's an irritation, but not a show-stopper: and no, it's not related to the upload problems - those earlier reports date back about two months ago.

Hi,
I asked the same question a while back, if you already have IE 6.0 open BOINC manager only opens one instance. The reply I received said it was down to one of the libraries in use.
The new Beta version 5.9.10 of BOINC manager does not have this problem.

I've run into this, and one of the windows never shows anything... I wonder why? (rig is a celeron 2.6, Win XP home, IE 6) Is this a bug in 5.8.15 (carried into 5.8.16)???

I'm running 5.8.16, on XP, but using IE7; and the bug you describe doesn't occur.

What advantage (if any...) is there to IE7, other than not being subject to the bug in question? I've held off upgradeing until someone (not from Micro$oft) explains any advantage.

Micro$hi.. Ups Micro$oft won't answer u, 'cause there's no advantage: Only a new GUI, more "pretty", bla, bla, bla...
I used Vista, XP, ME, w'98, w'95, NT,... And the conclussion I can make is that all MS based systems are only a problem on themselves! (Only NT based are a bit more stable, but...)

Vista... Sorry, but this isn't the thread to talk about.

Besides the fact that this was posted at 0400 Berkeley time, when nobody is at the lab? All the project team was probably asleep!

They *sleep* too?!! Where do they find the time to do that?! LOL!! Sorry, couldn't resist (and appreciating all the efforts to get these difficulties sorted out - Rosetta is filling in the downtime very well ;^))

WARNING! 5.9.10 is in beta testing... and is unstable, and (probably) contains bugs! Use only if you have no choice! (like you run Win XP Pro x64, or Win Vista x64... where 5.9.10 is the only official 64 bit version available) (there is a 64 bit version of 5.4.11 out there... but it's not from Berkeley)

Not only that!
I'm not sure, but It seems as there isn't any S@H client for that version!

Probably, on 64 bit platforms, you'll be able to use 32 bit applications (on "compatibility" emmulation or similar).

If they are running Linux on Bruno then they should be looking at changing values under /proc/sys/net/ipv4.
If it is Solaris then the same settings should be available as sysctls.

They probably need to drastically increase things like half open tcp connection slots and skbuffs.

The other likely option is NAT connection tracking slots on the router. If the router is open like maybe running Linux at its heart then there is a /proc for that, too. If it is closed there may be a command for increasing it.

I hope someone at SSL notices this.

Good luck guys. Thanks for all the work.

Duplicate message board pages have always opened on all my machines regardless of versions. This only happens on SETI. But it is useful. The first page opens at the start of the thread, then wait a bit, and the second page opens at the point one read to last time one read the thread.

just a thought:

what about using the old servers just switched off as a load balancer and one or two extra upload/download servers?
given that the storage array can keep up with it, that should decrease the dropped packets and take us out of the woods...

Good idea!... mhhh... mhhh... Have they space enought? I remember that those servers went off to let space enought for Thumper, Sidious, bla, bla, bla.

Maybe they need a new cabin.

But the most important, nobody from the Seti team answer about it !!!
Of course they have other problems to solve, but a new post about it will be welcome !!!

Do you want them to report every hour, or do you want them to spend what precious little time they have working on the problem? Knowing that they are working on it should be good enough, and have faith that they will solve the problem eventually. You'll know they did their job when it is working again.

It would be interesting though to know how now overdue WU's will be treated in respect of being counted as within time or not. It is also a question of whether to abort pending uploads to decrease my own network traffic due to connect attempts to nonresponding server. I'm inclined to flush results and not bother with SETI anymore.

Johan

The validators and assimilators are off.

Validators enforce deadlines.

They do this by looking at the results from a WU, and first checking for a quorum. If there is a quorum, credit is granted and all is well.

If there is no quorum, they check the due date. If work is overdue and there is no quorum, they reissue work.

This process continues until there is a quorum. Late work will get credit if it returned before the validator checks a given WU for a quorum.

Turning off the validators effectively extends the deadlines until they are turned on again.

... and turning them off also reduces the load on the database -- that means more resources for uploads/downloads.

Eric mentioned in a post that a FrankenServer [ Called Ptolemy I think ] under construction might be on the way to help with the load a little ....

FrankenServer ?????????

LOL, A machine made of parts, rather than pre-built like a SUN or a Dell or something. The parts are probably mostly New donated ones but we're waiting for the REAL story on that one.
[Edit: See Eric's posts in Eric's biannual post #6: You can tuna fish, but you can't tune a TCP ]

Really interesting. Frankenserver...
Maybe they can build any kind of MainFrame for high computing proceses!
(Based on Intel's 286, 386, 486, Pentium I, II, III, IV, etc...) je je je
