As a fellow academic university staff person, I understand budgetary constraints and the data/com issues with siting of systems in "closets" rather that real data centers, with all the nice A/C, redundant power and other "real" computing environments. As a seti member since 2000, when running on old i486 and AMD overclocked chips was cool.... who says running overclocked AMD chips isn't still cool? (except in the thermic sense...!) I'm doing so now, albeit with a overclocked Opteron 165, not a 486... (I ran a Cyrix 486 a long time ago (overclocked, of course), with Win 3.1) Alpha Processor forever...at least until it burns out. IP unknown, ISP Earthlink.com running Windows XP Home, using Netscape 7.2 dual booting Windows XP Pro x64. CPU AMD Opteron 165 OC to 1.854 Mhz (stock=1.800 Mhz) AMD Opteron forever - or until the next generation hits, or it gets toasted... (whichever occurs first!) :-))> . Hello, from Albany, CA!... Myself, I have Einstein and Rosetta keeping my box occupied... Another good idea for those who like myself havent updated the BOINC core software in a while is to upgrade to the newer version... I'm still running 5.2.13 on my two XP machines and my G4 Powermac. I told all my projects on Sat to not download any new work and tomorrow once a couple Einstein and some ABC WU's finish processing I'm upgrading BOINC. If so, then their CPUs don't go idle, but automatically just do more work for other projects. I love that projects can go up&down while BOINC simply continues on with other attached projects. I never have to care, much less daily check the clients -- they just go off on their merry way. I guess I just don't understand why folks are so concerned that SETI may be down for a few days. Second: U know that many information loses the sight of the Horizont ;) I mean that sometimes when we read your posts, we interpret a really vary of differents realities arround a notice, and that can be transformed on panic several times. So, I recomend u (only a suggestion)to use a list like system to report and to make some "reviews" of the actual status (yeah, work, work and more work): 1/5/07 Thumper blown away for several issues 2/5/07 We're awayting for a possible solution 3/5/07 Sun offered us a new server 3/5/07 Galileo started with problems: One CPU gone from him 4/5/07 Galileo's Ok, working with one processor less 7/5/07 Weekend: Minor problems on BOINC database: Fetchin' now 7/5/07 Thumper on rebuildin' table: Possibly ready on Wednesday 8th. etc...
