Message 549219 - Posted: 19 Apr 2007, 21:22:41 UTC

I changed the max CPU time from 100 percent to 75 percent on the preferences web page. But my CPU, according to Task Manager, is still running at 100 percent when only SETI runs. Is there something else I need to adjust?

Thanks for info

1) Did you update the project?
2) The expected behavior is to have the task run for 3 seconds at 100% with 1 second idle for a setting of 75%.

Adding to the above post, I just changed my screen saver setting to "minimal" but it still looks the same. So obviously, the preference changes I'm making on the web page are not taking effect on my computer. Am I missing something here?

After you make the change on the network, you have to click "update" on the computer for the project where you made the change.

John,

Thanks for the response.

No, I just checked. The CPU continues to run at 100 percent, well after 3 seconds have passed.

OK, open global_prefs.xml and see what it says there for <cpu_usage_limit>. If you have a global_prefs_override.xml, open that as well to see what it says there.

OK thanks again John, that did the trick.

Interesting that looking at Task Manager now while Seti is running, instead of a constant CPU Usage of 75%, it cycles between 100 percent and 50 percent @ approximately 2 second intervals.

I have a dual core cpu, (Core-2 duo E6600) so maybe that has something to do with it.

Thanks again.

Hmm, just checked Task Manager again and now, CPU usage is staying constant (hovering right around 75 percent).

Weird.

Yes, it would do that. The polling loop runs once per second, and controls everything, including whether to run anything on a CPU at the moment.

Weird.

I guess it depends on the precise timing of Task Manager’s queries or reports how the intermittent usage gets estimated: you may be seeing a “beat pattern” between the average (when it’s ‘in step’ with the CPU cycling) and all-or-nothing (when it’s ‘out of step’).
