Keep searchin',

To read to all the different points of views always raises more questions (and answers), which is a good thing.

This is a YES or NO question!!!

If you add anything other that YES or NO, bad for you. 2 or 3 letters. 3 for YES, 2 for NO. Here it is.

If SETI didn't give "credits" would you still do it???

Remember YES, or NO only, not justification either way. 2 or 3 letters, YES or NO.

(EDIT) A lot of folks have visited this post without a vote, please vote either way, no hard feelings either way.

Since I was the starter of the thread, I want to say why I started it "without" stopping the discussions that are going on - they are very thought provoking. PLEASE keep them going.

I started it as a result of comming home at night (after night) to see what's going on and it seems like the vast majority of the postings/threads are about, one way or the other, however you want to get there - credits I didn't get.

I can certainly appreciate that, from my personal perspective - I just bought and paid (actually paying) $1,200 for a 'puter "mostly" [I play Oblivion when I get a chance] for SETI.

To me (boy am I going to get beat up on this one) most are posted like the kid who didn't get his allowance, very attackive (is that a word???) WHERE ARE MY CREDITS!!!

I'll be more than happy to give those folks whatever credits they got shorted from mine.

Now, back to what I said earlier: I'm impressed with the discussions that have resulted from YES or NO :) -- KEEP THEM GOING! (Hope I didn't piss too many people off)

Yes but............
I would certainly not expend the time, effort, and electricity that I have in the past without the feedback and excitement of monitoring the RACs and total credits I have been able to achieve with what I have put into it. I am somewhat proud of where I have been able to get with only 9 rigs.
Would kinda be like getting the final scores from all the baseball games, but not being able to watch any. Not nearly as interesting, eh?
Don't get me wrong, I would still participate, but not at the level I do now. I would probably also start to split some time out to other projects under the Boinc umbrella, whereas right now I am a Seti exclusive cruncher.
I AM in it to contribute to the science, but it's the stats, graphs, and competition that make it more of a hobby to me.

Credits are nice, but I'd appreciate it if you can suggest a job for an ex-programmer who did Point of Sale (POS) development in the obscure language of Clarion SoftVelocity, aka Clarion, who has no direct desire to go to a very hot temperature environment such as JDA Software, which produced Win/DSS, which I am experienecd in, but don't want to go to Scottsdale, AZ, but has some experience in Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C++, Realia COBOL, and Java.

I live in Mesa, just next to Scottsdale. The general Phoenix area is a like it or hate it area because of the weather, 3/4 of the year it is outstanding but the other quarter is VERY hot. I grew up in Philly and I would rather deal with the Phx summer than the Philly winters, although for many, they would rather deal with the reverse, just personal preference. As far as helping you with work, unfortunately I can't help with that, I wish you the best of luck finding what you're looking for, maybe someone in the group can help.

YES, but with fewer resources. A good deal of my total computing time would probably go to Rosetta or something similar.

What if they [ET] decide to broadcast on an other frequency ? In the past time there has been a lot of talking about the right frequency and from what i heard a lot of scientists are questioning exactly that.

To be scientific is to question...

A very big assumption for the search for ET is that ET deliberately intends itself to be found. We then make the best guesses as to what will be the most likely way to get found. . . .

Agreed. The question I've always had is that, assuming an omnidirectional broadcast coming from ET would likely be too weak for us to pull out of the weeds, Why would "they" be beaming directly at US specifically on any frequency? The famous WOW! signal may have been for real, but the beam moved passed us and so could not be repeated/confirmed.

But I also feel we must continue to try!

I have spent 4 days in Calexico, CA, in July. That whole "dry heat" line is, well, just reference my initials... ;-)

One would hope that if such a beam of communication exists, those sending it would continue to send it for many years in the hopes of making some contact. Just as we have been trying for many years to recieve one.

I've driven across the green monster (the double-decker bridge) and on up to Langhorne during a storm that just barely had the I-95 corridor in a sloppy snow changing to rain mix. It didn't bother me too much. People are surprised when I tell them that it is possible for this area of Virginia to get 1-2 feet of snow, although that hasn't happened lately. The most snow I've ever driven in was the Blizzard of 1996, where we had 2 feet of snow in some areas of the city, even more in the mountains. Also, due to what is known as "Cold Air Damming", there are times where we can have a wedge of cold air here along the mountains and it can be quite cold here compared to just off to the northwest over in West Virginia and Ohio.

One would indeed hope since that's our best chance of hearing them. All speculation of course.
