I'll leave the troubleshooting to the experts. I doesn't look like I shed light on anything. Going with the newest BOINC version would be worth a shot.

David, exit boinc with "file" then "exit". Go to the windows "control panel" pick "add/remove programs", select boinc, then uninstall. There will still be a Boinc directory located at C:\\programfiles\\ that contains all your account and wu information. Then install a different version if you choose. NO work should be lost.

None of those options, controls, or paths exist on a Mac. All that should be required to uninstall BOINC is to choose File > Quit (or type command-q) and then drag the BOINCManager.app icon from the Applications folder to the Trash. When a new version is installed it should resume where the previous one left off, based on the contents of the BOINC Data folder in Library/Application Support/.

Well I completely deleted BOINC and all files associated with BOINC, including all files in Library/Application Support/BOINC Data. Installed the latest version of BOINC and started all over again. Progress wasa up to 17% when I checked an hour or so ago. When I checked just now, the progress was down to 3.65%. I have run out of options. BOINC is now doing nothing but using processing time and power to no end and I have no choice but to shut it down until yhere is some solution. The following is from the "Messages" log:

One last question we should have asked you before, are you using the screensaver or do you just have your Mac shut off the monitor?

Other than that I can't think of anything else offhand.

A good thought, actually … although I don’t see a lot of regularity in the timing of the problem in David’s logs, your question reminded me of the other Energy Saver setting: “Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for (time slider)”. This should definitely be set to “Never” when running BOINC, which (IME at least) doesn’t recover properly after the CPU has been sleeping.

I do use the BOINC screensaver and I have the energy saver set to "never" for sleep.

It appears to have restarted, then ran 14 minutes before goofing up, then you became active again and it ceased computation. Is your screensaver set to approx 14/15 minutes? If so, then try changing the time setting and see if the restarting messages correspond to those changes.

I'm not seeing other mac users reporting this issue, which leads me to think it's "some" setting exclusive to your machine.

I hate to be in disagreement with you, as you are far more experienced than myself.
But, a closer inspection will reveal to you that the Mac actually took 14 minutes before making another attempt to compute. Each attempt to compute met with an error pretty well straight away every time. However "Sun Apr 15 19:24:06 2007||Suspending computation - user is active" occurred just over 2 hours after the Restarting Computation, which implies that a considerable amount of crunching took place in spite of the intervening error, and it would be useful to know if this was reflected in the "Tasks" page.

David
My naïve suggestion would be to try, at least for a short time as a trial run, setting "Do work while computer is in use?" to "yes". If all is then working correctly, try reducing the amount of memory dedicated to SETI (so that it will interfere less in your work on the Mac as you had previously mentioned was required). Do this at "Disk and Memory Usage" in "General Preferences".

Might also be worthwhile updating to 5.8.17, although that's probably not making any difference to your problem -- but you never know, it might!!!

Good Luck

Another approach is to try disabling the screensaver and sleep modes if applicable.

And experienced or not, your strategy of limiting the variables one by one is a time honored engineering troubleshooting practice. ;-)

Hello,

I actually have the same problem since I upgraded to the latest version of BOINC for Mac. No difference whether it's running all the time or not. No screenserver. It's a 2 year old iBook with all Tiger updates. And there seems to be no progress. For example a unit was runing for 6 hours and when I check back after 2 hours its 6 and a half and the percentage has gone down.

Ok, today I started a new task. After about four hours it was at 12% or so. Then one process was not found (scroll down) and all of a sudden it showed 0.08% done. I will disable SETI for the moment and just run other projects.
