would this have anything to do with running version
boinc_3.20_i686-pc-linux-gnu
rather than 4.05?

upgraded to
boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu
it downloaded the new setiathome_4.02_i686-pc-linux-gnu
and chugging away on new workunits..

ok
dont suppose i could ask for a more descriptive error message could i?
something like .. "you need to upgrade to new boinc version now" or something?

I've seen this lately too, after upgrading to 4.05. But, as you said, only intermittent.
