Since BOINC came out I havent been able to properly download any packets.
I have it installed on several machines and on each one it is the same.
I install it, choose SETI as my work and wait.

It tells me numerous times that it tries to connect and fails. I havent been able to download a work order for a year now and it is rather by happenstance that I landed in this forum and decided to tell you about it. I had given up on BOINC last year.

Why did you replace the old client ? It did its job - never change a running system!

BOINC made my notebook crash a couple of times and the screensaver mode was responsible for that.

All in all I am pretty disappointed with BOINC and de-installed it on all machines as it procured problems which I really have not the time nor the energy to solve.

I like to help researching, no questions asked, but if its made difficult, time onsuming and in addition endangers my own work I _have_to_ quit!

Boinc really is running very well and very stable in the majority of systems today and has proven a great platform for distributed computing.

I have a similar problem with yours but only in Win Vista. My WinXP clients are working fine!

Every day, I am more and more convinced that connection problems are related with routers and firewalls. I can’t find a reason for it not to connect to the server but firewalled.

Can anyone tell us some basics related to how (port or what ever) boinc make its connections to the internet?

What do the messages say in the Messages tab? This will help us find out why it's failing to do as it's programmed on your machine.

Why did you replace the old client ? It did its job - never change a running system!

Please read Matt Lebofsky's post as to why the old client is no longer with us (and some other facts).

BOINC made my notebook crash a couple of times and the screensaver mode was responsible for that.

Quite probable. The rewritten screen saver is more demanding of video hardware than before. Personally, I'd recommend simply not using the screen saver because it takes away processing power that could be put toward the science.

All in all I am pretty disappointed with BOINC and de-installed it on all machines as it procured problems which I really have not the time nor the energy to solve.

I'm very sorry that you are having problems. I assure you, if you're willing, someone here can help get this resolved.

I have witnessed complete computer novices install this software and get it up and running without issue, so I assure you it generally is easy to use, so something must be preventing BOINC from doing as it's supposed to.

Ok, I will try and re-install it and if it works, ok.
If it doesnt, I will make some screenshots and see what data I can scrounge up, Event viewer etc and send that to you ...

Sigh, all for finding a sign of life :)

Your computer is giving the error code of -200. This means ERR_WRONG_SIZE -200 wrong size. It is saying the jpg file is the wrong size. I would agree that downloading a brand new file and installing that may fix the problem. Do not download the jpg file, download the whole client and start over.

Hi Fin,

Some ISPs compact graphics files (jpg, gif, etc) when you try to download them. If the reinstall doesn't work, try downloading the jpg file manually. You can get it here. Move it to your project folder, which is generally located at C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu and only then start you BOINC client. HTH,

Regards,
Wander

I DLed the seti515.jpg from the folder mentioned in this thread to no avail. It still tries to DL it, still gives me the error.

What should I try next?
My BOINC version is uptodate, I DLed it right when I made this thread a couple of weeks ago so it *should* be able to fulfill its job. (Other people have no problems with it, or so I was told)

Hi Fin,

there is an option to skip the image file verification in your general preferences. Go to Your Account, then click general perferences (view or edit). Scroll down to where it states "Skip image file verification?" and change this to "yes" (to change it, you must click on "edit preferences" right beneath). Save your changes (hit "Update preferences" button at the end of that page).

Now, open BOINC Manager, projects tab (in advanced view mode), highlight "Seti@Home" in the right hand list and click Update on the left. Then have a look on the messages tab to see if the error still appears.

If it still doesn't work, there are some other work arounds to try, so please report back.

Some of the network speed up programs do so by compressing images with lossy compression - the image looks sort of OK, but it does not have the same bits that it did originally, so the checksum fails to match.

Right now, the servers at Berkeleys are a little sluggish, we all have upload-/download problems ATM. This will probably be fixed in the curse of the day (at least I hope so...:-)). So it's hard to tell, if it's a failure on your side or if it's (more probably) something at Berkeleys end...

I would suggest to either close Boinc and try it again tomorrow or b) leave it as it is (BOINC will then continue to try downloading and eventually gets through - not recommended if you're on dial-up)

Hope this helps

I am using an UMTS modem on this laptop to connect to the inet.
Image file verification is still switched off, I double checked that.

Okay, I've noticed, that by using the download link Wander gave you (this one), the file "Seti515.jpg" will be renamed to "Seti515.jpeg" (at least with my IE). So please exit BOINC and redownload it from here (right-click picture, save as...), save it to your BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu folder and make sure, it keeps the right ending (.jpg, without the "e"!)

Another work around would be to use one of the optimised apps from Chickens page. These Seti apps also have the advantage to run much faster than the stock app. You need 7-Zip or WinRAR to extract these archives (you can find a link to 7-Zip on his homepage).

If none of this works, please report back, I' ll then try to prepare a zip file for download containing the missing image, ok?

Andy

Hi Andy,

I tried downloading the file with both IE and FireFox and the extension was the regular JPG (no E's). Well, if that's is happening to you, is completely possible that could be happening to him as well, because I though strange when he posted that even after manually putting the file there, BOINC wouldn't acknowledge its existence. Nice catch anyway :)

Regards,
Wander

Hi Andy,

Hi Wander,
sometimes, strange things happen. On both the PCs at work (where I've manually DLed the file before) they were renamed to "Seti515.jpeg" in the IE "save as" window. However, now, that I'm at home, it keeps it's ending (.jpg). Maybe there's an issue with file associations and their corresponding endings, dunno... (MS-Windows, no need to say more... ;-))

Well, let's see if this clears it up...

Regards
Andy

I know what you mean. When I try to DL and save a WMV file in the computer I use to crunch for Beta, it always ID the file as an "Adobe Acrobat 7.0 file (PDF)". I already tried to find some faulty registry entry, reinstalled both WMP and Acrobat, but no joy. I always have to rename the file afterwards :)

Regards,
Wander

I notice that it is an image file that is having the problem. I believe that there is a setting that allows verification of images to be turned off.

Hi John,

I believe Fin already tried it and it didn't worked. I just noticed that he's using a local preferences file. I think that's why it didn't worked.

@Fin,

Can you remove the file, restart BOINC and try the procedure again?

Regards,
Wander
