Warning, extremely geekish post below. Deliberate.

Somewhere online I found a news article saying that tonight on Jeopardy! there will be something that has never happened before. As soon as I read that I thought to myself, Three-way Tie! Then I saw a few posts on TVguide.com that suggested maybe all 3 players end up on the negative side, so no one is left to play Final Jeopardy! I highly doubt that, since the current champion is really smart - apparently he beat Ken Jennings at some crossword puzzle contest. Another idea was that someone questions every answer (oh man did I just write that?) on the board. That would be cool; I think I've done that a handful of times in my life (and not just during the celebrity, teen or college tournaments). Still my money's on the 3-way tie. Here's what I think will happen: the current champ will finish with exactly twice as much as both the contenders, and he'll bet zero, and the other two will bet everything and get the right question in FJ, resulting in the 3-way tie. I always thought that if I ever got on the show and I was in the lead going into FJ, I wouldn't try to bet such that I'd beat the 2nd-place contestant by $1, which lots of people do. I'd try to allow for a tie, so that both players get to come back.

Hmmmm, I bet this show has already aired somewhere on the East Coast. I also think Alex Trebek should step down as host someday soon. He's done a great job but he's started to act a little more aloof (read: senile) this season (I've been watching since his second season as host, whenever that was). His celebrity voice impersonations, and his foreign accents, for example. Huh?!?

I also heard some criticism about the show's partnership with the New York Times. I've got nothing against the Times, but I have noticed a difference in the tone of some of the answers. That the answers appear to have a "tone" to them at all is perhaps disturbing, for a trivia purist like myself. Still, Jeopardy! is still the best trivia game show on TV. I can't stand these newer ones where it takes a person an eternity to answer a single question.

I watch Jeopardy way too often myself. I once saw somebody win with $1. I also saw somebody who, after winning 6 games in a row, bet just enough in final jeopardy such that if he should guess correctly, and the second place person guess correctly as well *and* bet all their money, they would tie. And so they both tied, which I thought was very nice of the 6-game winner (giving somebody else a chance to get some $$$ as well).

Lately I've been seeing a lot of people going into Final Jeopardy with the lead *and* they got the FJ question correct, but they still lost because they assumed they would get it wrong and didn't bet enough money. Lame.

Anyway.. let me know what happens. I'm going out tonight and will miss it (and don't own any technology that records television).

E-mail press release posted by Aaron Barnhart on tvbarn2:

*****TUNE - IN ADVISORY*****

Dear Media Colleagues--

*This Friday, March 16th, 2007...and for the first time in 23 years, "Jeopardy!" history will be made. *

It was such a remarkable event we consulted a Game Theory expert and he said it may never happen again! I wish I could give you more information about this special show, unfortunately, I can only encourage you and your valuable readers to watch Friday's program. Alex Trebek and our producers remain mum and I, myself, have been sworn to secrecy.

Any special "tune-in" item for your readers, who are our viewers would be greatly appreciated!

Please check your local listings for station and time. Thank you so much!

Best regards,

Jeopardy won't be on until 3am here because of the March Madness telecast.

{sigh} I used to be able to stay up that late.

Three 'Jeopardy' contestants end up tied

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK -- All those years of answers and questions, and it's never happened before on "Jeopardy!" What is a three-way tie, Alex?

The three contestants on the venerable game show all finished with $16,000 after each answering the final question correctly in the category, "Women of the 1930s," on Friday's show. They identified Bonnie Parker, of the famed Bonnie and Clyde crime duo, as a woman who, as a waitress, once served one of the men who shot her.

"We've had a lot of crazy things happen on `Jeopardy!' but in 23 years I've never seen anything like this before," host Alex Trebek said.

The show contacted a mathematician who calculated the odds of such a three-way tie happening - one in 25 million.

The three contestants, Jamey Kirby of Gainesville, Fla.; Anders Martinson of Union City, Calif.; and Scott Weiss of Walkersville, Md; were all declared champions and taped a rematch that will air Monday.

technically this is a lie since I've seen all 3 players end up with zero before....

I tried to find it on youtube but all I got was the SNL Celebrity version (Comedy Central). Enjoy!

We watched the show, and it was really neat to have the champ (who really is SMART!) smile when the other two who were tied going in waited for his answer and bet. He had the answer and the exact amount to make a three way finish. Sort of fun to have a second start Monday with the same three.

Want to bet if the other two tie again he won't do it again? Of course it is taped in advance but we won't know until show time.

This is not a random event where there is no control over the outcome.

PS we watch from TIVOâ„¢ , so we can re-run to settle arguements, as well as fast forward the ads.
