I wish you guys would fix a problem with merging computers. I have had to rebuild some of my computers &/or upgrade some of them &/or rename some. I just rebiult 1 & SETI won't let me merge the 2 & I am guessing that your system for computer names must be case sensitive. I had a couple of systems that I had upgraded the OS from Windows 2000 Pro to XP Pro & a couple that I upgraded the whole system from P3s to P4s. Anyway I can NOT merge these computers. Can you please fix this problem so I can merge any of my computers on my account when I need to. Thanks in advance, N9RSU n9rsu@n9rsu.com P.S. - I have been a SETI@home member since Aug 1999. N5RSU |

I wish you guys would fix a problem with merging computers. I have had to rebuild some of my computers &/or upgrade some of them &/or rename some. There has been some discusion on the dev mailing list about this type of situation. There may be a little more flexability in the future. The problem is one of giving the users the needed abilities without providing a loophole where someone could continuously merge a bunch of similar computers into one apparent monster system. I doubt that you will ever be able to merge computers with different OS versions or motherboard. I have read that if you backup the Boinc folder and transfer it to the upgraded system before reinstalling Boinc, that it may be recognized as the same computer. I can understand what you are saying, But the merge feature use to work & now I can NOT get it to work at all. What is the sense in even having a merge feature if you can NOT use it anyway. I have been a SETI@home member long enough that I should be able to do my own merging as I had in the past. You guys need to allow it again. I want to keep my computer stats straight by being allowed to merge my computers when I do upgrades or even rebuilds after crashes. If you guys are going to be such sticklers on such things, then I might as well pull out of SETI@home after over 7 1/2 years of doing it. PLEASE, fix & or reinstate the merge feature or I will probily pull out as much as I do NOT want to. N9RSU N5RSU |

Hello: If the CPU description or the OS description changes, it is a different computer, this is NOT going to change. Eventually, you should be able to delete the old computers, and there will be no penalty to your account. BOINC WIKI |

The computers are the same computers. I had to re-install the the same OS after having to reformat & re-install the OS after part of the OS became corrupted. While I was at it, I upgraded the CPU. Otherwise it is the same computer right down to the motherboard, same harf frive, same memory sticks, same power supply, same case, same keyboard, same mouse, smae monitor, etc, etc, etc. The same OS was used with the same Product Key. If you are going such a stickler for details then I will put the old CPU back in, but I still want to merge my 2 LAD 50 computers & my 2 LAD 60 computers as they are STILL THE SMAE COMPUTERS!!!!!!!! As John said, even if they're mostly the same parts, if the OS and CPU has changed, then it's considered a different computer and cannot be merged. No exceptions. Simply wait until the other IDs for the same computer have zero results and then delete the ID if you want to keep things tidy in your account. |

It is the same OS & who are you to say NO exceptions. You are NOT a Forum Moderator or Developer, etc. I have been doing this a few years longer than you & have merged my computers before after such fixs or repairs. You handle your account the way want & I will handle my account the way I want. If they want, I will put the P4 3.0 GHz CPU back in & it WILL be the same computer. The ONLY difference will be that I had to redo the hard drive after some files became corrupted & I had to re-install the SAME OS back on the SAME computer. N9RSU N5RSU |

It is the same OS & who are you to say NO exceptions. There's no need to talk to me that way. Just because I'm not a mod or a developer, doesn't mean I don't go about volunteering my help around here on these boards (and as far as I can tell, my help is appreciated). Nor do I care how long you've been crunching for SETI, that doesn't change the outcome of the answers. I answered only because you seem to fail to understand that you've already been told 'no', and some people just need a third party to get it through their head. In the future, if you don't want to have multiple IDs for the same system, then I suggest backing up your entire BOINC directory, then restoring it after you redo your hard drive, this way you won't be assigned a new computer ID. So please, unless you want me to treat you the same way you just treated me, I'd suggest a little more kindness and a little less "don't tell me what to do". Remember the Golden Rule. |

RE: [In the future, if you don't want to have multiple IDs for the same system, then I suggest backing up your entire BOINC directory, then restoring it after you redo your hard drive, this way you won't be assigned a new computer ID.] *****I have done this & still gotten new Computer IDs issued to my computers.***** I am sorry if I seemed a little upset, but I have been frustrated, by NOT being able to merge the computers that I mentioned & yes I have been able to merge them in the past, but foe some reason these won't merge this time. All I want is to merge the computers that should be merged & I know these can be done. Again, sorry if I was rude. N9RSU N5RSU |

BOINC also occasionally changes the way in which the CPU description is handled. This has happened recently. This has caused me an issue with one of my computers, I was fiddling with optimised clients, and have the same computer currently listed twice. I would like to merge them but can't, due to the apparent change of CPU. But nothing has actually been changed. Can someone manually merge the offending clients for me, as I am unable to. (It's obvious which ones if you have access) or is this also not possible at all. (I don't want to lose track of the credit granted to this particular machine it's over 500,000 on it's own) |

BOINC also occasionally changes the way in which the CPU description is handled. This has happened recently. We can't help, we're just volunteers like you, even the moderators have no access to the database. This would require manual intervention from the 3 or 4 administration people. There are only a couple of them with the level of database access that would be required and they are too busy just keeping the back end up and the project advancing to provide personal assistance to 180,000 active user and a total of 640,000 accounts with 1.5 million computers. We all get ghost computers from time to time. Sometimes you can merge them. Sometimes you have to delete them. Sometimes the provided tools fail completely and you have to live with it.
