To some this might be old but to many this is cool or important. Can somebody tell us what building is for what? I put numbers to be sure so any seti employee please refer by numbers and kindly give us comprehensive building usage description?

Yes, those green roofs are residences. So is 16, and part of 11 (11 is also the cafeteria). Building 1 contains the control room as well as many engineering labs, the SETI racks, etc. Building 2 is staff offices, library, etc. I have to run but I can probably fill in the rest later.

If you watch the movie Contact, Jodi foster has sex with Matthew McConoughy in the one closest to the left edge of the picture. I have stayed in the one next to it.

9 is the visitor center. 2 is mostly administrative offices. The dark line that passes through 2 and 11 is the shadow of a 50 foot cliff. The dark blue blob near the lower right hand corner of "Are these residences?" is the swimming pool. I would guess most of the large flat buildings are equipment storage and machine shops.

1. Telescope control room, more electronics than you can shake a stick at, engineering labs, visitor offices
2. Staff offices, library, meeting rooms
3. Generator? Makes loud buzzing noise, scared me while I was walking by it at 4 am one morning.
4-8. I think this is instrument testing area. That's a pretty steep (downhill) road that only engineers go down as far as I know.
9. Visitor's centre - this is a very steep (uphill) path but totally worth the climb.
10. nondescript building - storage or power, I think.
11. Visiting Scientist Quarters/Cafeteria/Laundry.
12. Rest stop on way up to Visitor center. Often people there selling pina coladas.
13. I can't remember, but I've been on top of it. I think it's for aeronomy?
14, 15. no clue
16. VSQ North, nicest residences on the grounds (actually you have to go out the front gate to get there).
17. another nondescript building that you pass when you want to go out on the catwalk that leads to the receiver platform (the triangle above the dish).

All right thank you for your nice virtual guided tour. I understand you have to hide buildings 4-8 from outsiders eyes. So the real cool stuffs are buildings from 4-8 :-D ?

google earth... it certainly has raised a few hackles here and there...

Has anyone else found "buildings" that exist in real life but googleearth shows a blank smooth green park with swings and slides, or a carpark..

Looks cool and important to me. Nice to have the details and closeup description from our scientists. Interesting, 4 AM!

Seeing a picture like this sure gives some meaning to my minuscule involvement in SETI@Home.

No but I was kinda surprised when I found Area 51 on Google Earth. Just type in Area 51. Simple as that lol.

Yeah, I was also surprised when I first found it. It's actually really interesting to look at, especially the runways. You have the 2 runways on the dry lakebed that are about 4 miles long and form a "V" shape, and then you have that long runway where half is on the lakebed and the other half extends into the desert. I think it measures close to 10 miles long and is about 400 feet wide. Makes you wonder what type of aircraft would require such a runway. There's also a few other interesting features you can see, such as that section on the long runway that appears to be made up of several metallic panels. It appears to be part of the actual runway and is almost at the point where the 2 runways on the lakebed intersect to form the "V". Maybe something is loaded onto the runway from underneath. It's pretty interesting stuff.

Area 51 also has what appears to be a baseball diamond in the northwest corner.

That's because if you build it, they will come...

St. Paul, Alberta built a UFO landing pad in 1967 for Canada's Centennial. The town's still waiting for *they* to come, to the best of my knowledge.
