This week's focus is getting all the systems ready for the Y2.00719178K problem this weekend. Not a big deal, we think, but since Daylight Savings Time is suddenly three weeks early this year we better make sure all servers are ready for this unexpected change in schedule, lest they are an hour off from the rest of the world and therefore all hell will break loose. At any rate, I tackled the public web servers just now, and will get the remaining "thorny" systems during the usual outage tomorrow. Since we might have to reboot the network appliance rack we might take this opportunity to shut it down so we can re-route some power cables in the closet. It's getting to be dangerous spaghetti back behind the racks again. Still recovering from very minor fallout due to the upgrade of isaac. Mostly I find myself having to install missing packages or recompiling static versions of certain libraries so this can become an alpha BOINC development machine again. Bob's still getting the kinks worked out of the BOINC replica database. Perhaps we'll get that rolling tomorrow afternoon. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. What is hard is to do it." - Jeanne-Claude |

Just wanted to mention how nice it is to have frequent tech info info from you. It seems a much different (more inclusive)atmosphere when there's frequent communication. Thank you for your efforts. |

Again, I feel out of the loop. How does Y2.00719178K decode to Mar 05 2007? May this Farce be with You |

Again, I feel out of the loop. How does Y2.00719178K decode to Mar 05 2007? Year 2007 + 0.19178 of the year. 0.19178 * 365 days = 70 days 70 days = March 11 March 11 = new start of U.S. Daylight Saving Time QS |

Again, I feel out of the loop. How does Y2.00719178K decode to Mar 05 2007?It does not, but taking the simple supposition that it is thousands of years (Y for year and K for thousands), then .19178*365=70 (rounding to five significant digits--the 70th day this year is March 11--the day the U.S. Congress unexpectedly designated as the first day of Daylight Savings Time for us this year. (Days thus far from y2k) / (# of days in a millennium (aka 1000 years)) ~2625/365000=0.0071917808219178082191780821917808 (Yes I know my days on both sides a touch off, but you get the point.) edit: archae86 - I'm slower ;) |

No computer savvy politicians in Congress then? I hope the UK government does not get word of this, they will turn it into a "cash for hours" scandal! Thanks for the update Matt. Regards, Graeme. www.boincuk.com |

Seems like a pretty absurd secret code with absolutely no benefit (assuming you live on Earth). If pressed, I would prefer Y2.007.03.11. I don't need a calculator with 80 significant digits. May this Farce be with You |

Maybe it's just me, but I think the humor is based on the obscurity. After all, we have the Y2K problem, and the Y2038 problem. |

I use a code number like that to pinpoint the popularity date of the songs I listen to. For example I assign "5652" to "Portuguese Washerwomen" to signify that that fine piano instrumental by Joe "Fingers" Carr was popular in early July 1956. |

For the record, I simply just pulled out my calculator and came up with the number Y2.00719178K for the title of this thread, which I personally feel is the most elegant, if not also fairly accurate way of depicting this particular event. If this "name" hasn't been used elsewhere before, then I claim all creative rights. As for categorizing songs, I have this odd penchant for knowing the exact length of every song in my album collection to the second. This kind of number memory came in handy during my college radio days, like when I needed a song that was, say, exactly 5:48 long to end out my radio shift at exactly three hours. Otherwise, it's a useless skill that I could do without, and as I get older I'm less able to do so (I blame CDs - the song lengths are randomly placed on the packaging if anywhere, unlike record albums which always had them on the album itself). I can't remember phone numbers or famous irrational numbers to the Nth digit. Those are completely random, meaningless values. I only can remember "data" i.e., the cost of something I bought 10 years ago, or the length of a song, etc. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. I only can remember "data" i.e., the cost of something I bought 10 years ago, or the length of a song, etc. I used to have an excellent memory for numbers, but it’s been declining since my ’teens. I haven’t forgotten most of those I learned in my youthâ€â€I still remember the ’phone number of my childhood home in Ottawa (which has been completely pointless for 37 years now), and the first thirty-odd digits of À (all but the first half-dozen of which are useless for any practical purpose)â€â€but offhand I can’t recall any of my current friends’ numbers, and I don’t even get my brother’s right the first time, every time. |

You'd think that losing an hour of sleep would be punishment enough..... Some one forwarded me this site the other day. It lists various OS's with version info relating to the files, packages, libraries or patches that are good to go for the new DST scheme. The site is pretty *nix specific, but there's a link to the Windows patch too. Info on DST Patching |

Does this have anything to do with the recent change in how stats are counted? Seti seems so quiet on the matter yet have all these new places to let us be informed...Or do you just not make it to number crunching much? Any info would calm things..
