Once again, no big news today (at least so far). We got the drives in so we'll attempt to upgrade isaac again tomorrow. This won't affect the SETI@home project but we will have the usual backup outage. Soon we're going to bring sidious up as the BOINC database replica (maybe tomorrow). We haven't had any "bad periods" for almost two weeks now, which means we're gaining confidence that recent database logic changes were indeed beneficial.

Other than that, nothing all that interesting/important to report.

"Steady as She goes"

That is useful news in itself, especially so with all the various changes underway.

Perhaps it was all Cogent's fault in the first place.

Is Seti dead?? I haven't been able to get any WUs for a several weeks now. All I get is the error message: "couldn't connect to host name[setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu]" and "couldn't resolve host name[setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu]" and "Temporarily failed download of (WU #)"

I'm about to give up and just uninstall SETI from my computer since it is only taking up memory space seemingly. It would be nice to know what to do with this turn of events. Thanks.

We've been doing network updates, which went unnoticed by more than 99.9% of the SETI clients. Either because of your ISP, your OS, or some unfortunate timing, you were unable to get the "change of address" message we sent out all over the internet weeks ago. This is a failing of the internet or your operating system, not us. If you are on a windows system, some things to try are here.

@ Matt - the the BOINC client (Today kept starting and stopping - then Re-Starting) All on it's own.

PS - did the DNS Flush etc . . . still up to Re-Starts after it's Started Crunchin' - gets 10% or so done - and then Disappears completely - and attempts to re-start again . . .

hope THAT makes some sense - sure doesn't to me (the Client that is)

note: even got one crunch and returned earlier Today - though the others went somewhere and i have No Idea where . . .

Have tried all of that flush stuff several times. I noticed that you said to "quit" BOINC. How do I "quit"?? I have done the SUSPEND and EXIT thing. I have not tried to RESTART WINDOWS yet. Since I see no QUIT buttton, could you tell me how to do that?? Thanks

Maybe it'll help if someone outside SETI who knows how DNS is supposed to work can comment.

Each DNS record has a field called "TTL" -- and the TTL value tells everything else out there how long it can keep the information. The current value of TTL for "setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu" is 300 seconds.

It's possible to get old information, but only about 2 or 3 times that value, but that shouldn't last longer than about 15 minutes.

Basically, the folks at Berkeley are promising that there will be no IP address changes for the next 5 minutes, but they aren't promising any longer.

There are "web accelerators" that take DNS entries and add them to your hosts file (effectively bypassing DNS) and there are DNS resolvers that simply ignore TTL.

Especially given the whole "is SETI dead, maybe I should just remove it" attitude, I would recommend shutting down and rebooting. If that doesn't work, I'd check the "hosts" file and make sure it's basically empty. You'll probably find that in c:\\winnt\\system32\\drivers\\etc. ... and if that doesn't work, ask your ISP if their DNS resolver caches things longer than TTL.

Thanks Matt, but I don't have any of those files on my Windows XP Home. These are the files that won't download and I can't even seem to ABORT them either. this what I get:

Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi followed by Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded

then I get the failure to down load the following files:

18se03aa.8593.23244.67314.3.97 system I/O and
18se03aa.8593.2344.67314.67314.97

Did you reboot?

My 2 cents... the problem is most likely Windows XP. Restarting my computer has fixed all the problems that I have had the last few months.

It is probably a good time to download and install the latest BOINC (5.8.15) too.

John

Sorry for the delay email me off list and we will see what we can find out. To an extent some kind of fact finding is needed...
