I wonder why people are so busy giving the staff at BOINC a hard time.

OK, there has been some hardware problems and a case with a RAID failure, which in my knowledge should be impossible, if the RAID has been configured properly. As we say: "Big boys don't backup. Big boys cry a lot!!!" And I'm sure that the staff has cried a lot!!!! ;-)

But for Chris'sake!! They are working on it. They have families, and other things to do in their lives than working on BOINC constantly. Maybe this is even more than some of you guys out there have, considering all the complaining of no credit and pending credits and what else some of you complain about. I think the messages from the staff has been fully sufficient to my needs of information.

If you don't have WU's just turn your pc off and save the power or run something else. Go for a walk; it's still summer-autumn here on the northern hemisphere, so go out and feel the nature. It will even lower your stress-level so you're not so irritatet or angry of lacking WU's. And remember: The staff's intentions are NOT to annoy you. I guess, they would be happy if the system runs smoothly and the problems are great stress-factors for them too!!!

To the staff: You are doing a great job considering the circumstances!!!!

Yes, we have had some good days this year with sun and good temperatures above 20 C. Lots of rain too, but with the right clothing it's OK for me. I don't like heatwaves as we have had the past few years. I'm Danish and I'm not made for those hot nights and heating days!!! So this summer was right for my taste!!!

Most all the so called negative posts don't call the project out on not trying or personnel shortages or hardware/software shortages. Most of us just want a clear message on the news page that tells us what should or shouldn't work and a best guess as to when it might work.

For instance, the last news: "September 5, 2004 Because of the holiday weekend and family commitments we are a bit short handed and short on time. So the uldl move is taking us longer than expected."

If there's going to be no one present tonight, a message saying "we will be checking the system on mm/dd/yy at xx:xx UDT to see if the move is complete". If I have five hours of work left, I can switch to classic and not bother banging the servers until the next news update.

I committed to Boinc Seti because that's the project I want to run. I'll run Classic if Boinc Seti is down. Just tell me. I can't see why that is too much to ask and it doesn't cost anything.

I run 'em both - I have 4 cpu's. And CPDN too. I'll always have something to do :-)

>>"Big boys don't backup. Big boys cry a lot!!!"

Not that long ago five days work was lost because the database snapshot was out of date.

This last week a web page caching problem led to numerous web pages being lost and having to be recreated. (note, 'recreated' not 'restored')

I can't help but think that the project team would be a lot less stressed if they had decent backups. Numerous problems have occurred because of incorrect configurations and mysterious 'bugs' that suddenly appear.

The project team need to implement a credible system management regime. Until they do, I think they deserve a hard time.

According to the thread title:

Because they are on break for nearly 3 month now...

No they haven't ... they have probably worked their butts off... they have had alot of problems, and it's a big project. (and some people feel it shouldn't have left beta when it did(i.e. did they do realistic stresstesting by simulating the workflow of 40000 clients))
But it's like it is ... and posting stupid comments won't help...

Some people don't realise the work that's put behind it. And when the SETI staff don't show it, I'm not surprised...

I think this kind of replies would be more infrequent if the news would be replaced with a detailed report/work-log, where they quickly can add a few words about what's happening, and update this when they do stuff. Sure, the people involved would be required to spend 5 minutes less on BOINC to inform the users, but OTOH, we would have 5 times as less flaming going on in here

Yeah, it was tooooooooo hot! But then, the first couple of weeks of Sept. are always the hottest. I live about 2 miles from the Gillespie airport where I work. I also work at the Montgomery airport too. The company I work for has a presence at both. I just hope it's not as hot today, I'm going to my brother's for a BBQ and DVD watching. Have a great Labor Day neighbor! L8R....

I believe I have a security breach - it would seem there's been some kind of copy/paste of my thoughts, anyway :-D

off-topic:

> An aside - you actually had a summer in Denmark?

Though many Danes would say we hadn't had any summer at all (I think it's genetic :-D), we have had a period of about a month or so with temperatures in the "too hot for me"-range - and right now it's beginning to be a bit too hot once more. Personally I'm waiting for temperatures below 20 degrees celsius in day time and one figured temperatures at night :-)

Hi All,
While I agree with Lena on her comment, I do agree with others that communication has not been forthcoming by the responsible parties. I have been through the message boards however, and have seen that Rom Walton, even on his holiday time has addressed issues on other threads. He as been dedicated to us, and although he does not know the status of every single thing that goes on at Admin, he does a damn good job of seeing that we are informed. He listens to these Message boards, and has made corrections in code to keep us going. He has sidestepped his music career and personal time to give us the best possible solutions one can. If you notice alot of his posts come way after UCB is closed.
Yes I do believe he deserves a holiday, or two...

Warm Regards,

Rocky Cudd

Oh, now this was just mean.

What they're going through is tough, it's hard work, and apparently, thankless as well.

What was supposed to be a way to harness wasted computing power has turned into this huge, starving dragon that for some reason is breathing fire down the backs of the people who created it.

I'm not a cheerleader, I just know that this is not my project. It doesn't belong to us. We aren't "customers" and nobody is going to win a prize because they participated in SETI.

Beating on the people at Berkeley does not help.
