Message 519217 - Posted: 18 Feb 2007, 16:06:06 UTC

Ever since the network changes started, I have not been able to download any S/H file successfully. When all of this started I was running under BOINC 5.4.11. I have since upgraded to 5.8.8 and finally to 5.8.11 with no success. My system is XP/Pro SP2 utilizing a Intel P4 2.8Ghz processer with 2.0GB of ram.

I have flushed/registered my DNS so often that it seems that the machine knows to do it on it's own. I have not installed any new hardware or software, including upgrades that would affect how both S/H & BOINC operate. I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!

Cliff, Please can you post a copy of the line from your error messages where this occurs.

What type of connection to the internet do you have? Is it a mobile 3G/UMTS?

If the error happens with the JPG file there is a fix of manually downloading seti515.jpg, then saving it to C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu or your equivalent folder.

You need to make sure the JPG is 9068 bytes, if it is not, force a reload until it is.

Then you need to make the JPG file Read Only so that it is not overwritten by a new download. In case you don't know how to make a file read only, right click the file, go to Properties, then check Read-only then OK.

Hope this helps. I got most of this fix from this thread but I added the make file Read-Only bit.

Cliff, Your errors are different to the ones that I had, which only affected the seti515.jpg file.

I'm sorry but I don't have a solution for your problem, someone else will come along soon that has seen this.

I do have a couple of guesses:

It could be related to some other software interfering with the file downloads.
What Anti-Virus software do you use?
Do you have a software firewall other than the Microsoft one built into XP ?

Try doing a search on these boards for this problem.

Keith.

I use Computer Associates Internet Security Suite that contains both Anti-virus and firewall. I have never had any problems with this software. I have downloaded the seti515.jpg file, but I still get the same errors. It also seems that I have been limited to two of these error before the project cuts me off.

The limit of 2 (it will be one shortly) is to prevent a host from blowing through a huge number of tasks. The max limit for S@H is 100 per CPU. Any error reduces this by one. A correctly reported result (may or may not be valid) doubles the limit up to the max set by the project.

I have heard of Computer Associates but am not familiar with their products.

Have you tried temporarily disabling this software for a few minutes during the download? Only do this if you are confident with the temporary risk. I only suggest doing this for a few minutes to try to eliminate this as a cause of your problem.

I assume you have tried re-booting your system.

One other possibility is that BOINC has de-bugging options that can be enabled, but I have not used these myself, only read about them.

I suggest you post again in the Number crunching forum as that seem to get more readers than the Windows forum.

Good luck, Keith

Hiya all,

Still having same problems with S@H file downloads or at least their sig or checksum, here follows the error messages:

BTW have got 5.8.15, but this issue has occurred since doing a clean Windows install and first happened on 5.4.11 and have downloaded 5.8.11 and whatever the previous version to that..... all of this on the same machine which successfully ran S@H and is running Rosetta OK
I am running XP Pro SP2 Sempron 2800+, Gigabyte K8 Triton M/B 1GB RAM, 40 or more GB available on 2 physical discs....... I am also using CA Internet Security software, although it doesn't seem to be interfering, although I will go look closely at its log files.

Help please,

Regards,

Tim

I am also running CA'a Internet Security Suite, but I have tried turning it off (no effect). I tried using a different PC (no firewall, but the problem persisted (even on th other PC). SO, the only local common denominators are the OS (Winsows XP Pro (SP2)) and my internet connection (Comcast through an Intellinet router).

BTW, I have several other projects running on BOINC that are not having any problems whatsoever, just SETI@Home.

I'm going to replace the router later today. I'll let you know the results.
