Message 1367095 - Posted: 12 May 2013, 12:36:45 UTC - in response to Message 1367088.

I have a question... I leave my computer on 24/7, and on the Results Page, it has a 3 day gap with NO results showing, and on two additional days, it shows only one task per day being done, when my average has been about 12 per day. I was wondering, if the work was lost, along with my credits!

Thank You!
Ed

Eric's Blog isn't really the right place to ask these sort of questions, for that we have Q&A and Number Crunching.

Are you sure that it was 1) actually powered up between the 6th and the 12th? 2) If was powered up, that Boinc was actually running?

Do know that validated results don't stay in the Boinc database for ever, 24 hours after validation they are purged, it could be all your results from the 6th to the 11th have already been purged.

Probably not the right place to post this but I wanted to get read by the all knowing staff. Figured it would get read by staff posted here first...

On the remote chance one of my seti@home tasks actually were to find something would I be the first to know about it. OR would I even know?

I guess what im asking is for example the graphic that is shown... Would it pause on, and/or highlight a signal and start blinking or something.

Or just simply continue and submit the findings without me ever being the wise'er?

Just Curious if SETI is prohibited from letting the general public know first or ever... in the long awaited significant result sort of thing...

Here's a link answering that exact question: http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu/about_seti/about_seti_at_home_5.html.

In short: no, your computer will not blink or highlight or anything of the sort. Our computers routinely find interesting results, but they are meaningless unless they can be correlated at the same point over time to confirm it is an intentional signal being sent from a specific point in space.

They will confirm with other groups once a signal is confirmed from the same point in space to see if other SETI groups can also detect the signal.

Once that has been confirmed - it will be made public. There is no law in the U.S. that prevents SETI from releasing this information. And even if they were, big secrets are the hardest to keep - someone would talk and be able to provide proof.

Just so anyone else wondering about this... I wanted to post that info:

Question...

"I appreciate the quick reply.

One last thing.

If all that confirmation was made and made Public.

Would I ever get a respnce thru seti@home about it?"

Your reply...

"Dr. Eric Korpela has said that the volunteers that find the signal (after all, multiple computers will be involved), the project will contact you and ask if you would like to be mentioned in the discovery of the finding."

hello all
I'm Chris, not really new to Seti@home since the spring of 1996 with my first PC and off and on with those under powered PC;s and this was just during the times of finding alien communications out there, but now i have CPU's that wont crumble with the usage. i have 2 PC's working on this, my folks new intel 2 core PC and they use it probly use it 3hrs every 2 days for facebook so all that the extra time is devoted to the cause. my PC is a cybertron game pc, intel I5 liquid cooled so nothing ive done has bogged it down at all, unlike my older pc's
anyway looking forward to talking to you guys and have questions that are complete alien to everyone around me here :-) i like star trek, they dont even know what that is so thats the deal going on here with me in IOWA YAAA hay i see spock's face in the corn fields every year, the 'pointed ears' get it? ya thats the best we have around these parts :-P :-)

Welcome Chris. You say you were a member of SETI before, if you remember the email address you used to sign up back then, you should click here to reclaim your original start date. Since SETI didn't open it's doors until April of 1999, more than likely your start date isn't earlier than that for SETI@home.

When did you invent that time machine allowing you to start working on SETI@home before it even began? If you have the flux capacitor design please share.. We can speed up the project by moving to the future and simply identifying that alien signal source and bring back the Freq and sky location...

We can then move on to other efforts...

I take it it was a typo.. 1999 right..Lol

Anyways welcome to the project...
Never engage stupid people at their level, they then have the home court advantage.....

tho i didn't put a starting year it might have been in 99, got it back to 2004 but i cant remember my very first e-mail at the moment. since im 46 i could find a better use for that time machine you say i have:-) like going back and getting the Dos program before bill gates does and in the 90's give seti@home billions in grants and funds so maby that flux capacitor dream could be a reality :-) my plan sounds better.
is there any promoting links that can be used on facebook?

There are pages about various Boinc projects on Facebook, but they have no official connection to said projects.

One of them posts on my timeline every time I pass another million credits. Actually, that might be Boincstats doing that.

Quick Question: Why does it take so long to process certain jobs? I have 5 jobs still in the pending status going back to mid-February and more than a dozen still pending from the first week of March, and yet some of the jobs that were completed only last week have already been processed.

There does not seem to be any visible logic to how the process works. Please advise...

You should ask in the Number Crunching or Questions and Answers forums for assistance with your question.

Yours is a commonly asked question over in Q&A where I typically assist with helping other users.

But to give you an answer: all workunits require that the results match that of a quorum partner, therefore the speed with which results are validated and you are given credit is directly related to how fast your quorum partner finishes their copy of the task and if the results match closely enough. If they do not match closely enough, another copy is sent out to another user as sort of a "tie breaker". Depending on the reliability of those other users, or how much "uptime" they leave their system crunching data, it is rare but not unheard of for some workunits to take 3-6+ months for validation.

I am now not get credit for work done for Milkyway@Home on the Combined BOINC Individual Member Rankings. Those credits used to show and are almost as many as for Seti@Home. Is there some setting that may have been changed?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul, the SETI@home staff blog isn't really the correct place for your question. The Q&A forum or Number Crunching would be best.

Also, each project is separate from each other, so any questions pertaining to Milkyway@home would be best asked on their forum.

Is anyone at SETI responsible for stats updating at the various stats publishers, such as Free-DC Stats, BoincStats or BOINCcombined? MOST of my completed tasks have been taken off the tasks page, BUT I don't get any new tasks and the stats for SETI at the above mentioned stats publishers have not updated in over a week.

As mentioned above, this question is better asked in Q&A or Number Crunching (and has been several times recently).

However, the answer is, Seti has been having server problems in the last week or so. Exporting stats to 3rd party sites is not critical to the science, so fixing it is a low priority. Rest assured that as long as your stats continue to grow as reported here on the Seti site, they will eventually be exported to all the other sites. Your work is not lost.

I just wondering, after loading the new SETI update 7.4.23, where statistics box is located, I could click Show User Average, and click any line position. I would get a number User Average and it would put a reference line on that area. I found that reference line very convenient and helpful. Since that line would stay at that position and I could use it to compare, after I went back to Projects box, clicking, Update. If I got new task, it would also show where I was, with the reference line and the new Statistic, Update position. With the latest version, I only get a updated average number but no longer the reference line. Can you put back the reference line with the next update, unless others complained and found it a problem or annoyance? Thanks Phil
