sure everbody saw it...

but I have never seen such a high level, clear and qualified, good putted information from the ucb front page. Good things must be visualized.
cool!

Thankyou very much for this level of info.

All the best wishes and success to the stuff of ucb

September 3, 2004
The SnapApp folks were here for most of the afternoon. They replaced the processors with ones that are faster and have larger caches. More importantly, we talked about how to stabilize the system. The plan is to simplify both the HW and service mix as much as possible in the hopes of removing the variable that is causing the hangs (and of course they will be going for the root cause at their lab). We altered the startup so that a bare minimal set of services are running. And we are going to only use the 18000 head unit for now, keeping no data on the sd30 expansion. This means moving some data around. We first have to move the upload/download data to a temporary volume on the sd30, then reconfigure the space on the 18000 head, then move the uldl to the head. The move to the temp volume is happening now. Tomorrow morning we will do the reconfiguration and start final move. With luck we will have the project up by EOD tomorrow.

I'm glad that it seems they got the attention of SNAP technical folks other than the tier 1/2 phone folks! Maybe there is a light at the end of the SNAP Box!

It is a giant and positive step for sure. Apparently no data
has been lost so far and I am confident that the system will
be stable soon. Thanks for the nice jobs and for good level
of informations.

Yes, things are really looking up! Sometimes the most successful projects turn out to be the one's that get a lot of scrutiny.

JAF,
It is certainly beginning to look that way. I still wonder what happened to the other sponsors names on the MainPage.

I think, as the names have not reappeared, that we can only conclude that the sponsors have asked for their names to removed. I wouldnt be surprised if people had started to mail them asking why they werent supporting the project.

Maybe Rom will clarify (I know hes busy at the moment)

As far as I know, all the sponsors are still supporting the project.

The main page was deleted by a caching bug, and for some reason it had to be re-created quickly. I suspect that when the page was quickly recreated, adding the sponsors back on was a low priority workitem that day since many pages had to be recovered.

I'll remind David about it and get them put back up.

I remember not long ago that five days work was lost due to an out-of-date snap shot of the database.

I don't want to level personal criticism here, but surely this is another symptom of poor systems management. Why aren't these things properly and regularly backed up? In a commercial organisation the loss of a week's work would be the subject of an internal inquiry, at the very least. Imagine what would happen at a bank!

Rom - since you're the most regular contributor from the team here, could you comment, please?

I was surprised at the amount of info posted as well. I believe I have enough WUs to crunch just in case it DOES take a few days to fix the Snap problem. I have:

13 WUs - Ready to report
2 WUs - Running
22 WUs - Ready to run

The 22 WUs should last me for about 5 days or so, maybe. I just thought of something. The temp here has come down considerably so I may be able to keep the PC on 27/7. But then, I think about my dial-up situation. If I set my dial-up not to close after no activity, my WUs will continue to run. If not, they will stop and I will need to re-start BOINC to get them running again. They just will not re-start on their own. :( L8R....

Nope. Southern California! We've been without rain for 140+ days. San Diego is built on a desert. L8R....

Edit:
D'oh! I see what you were talking about. Yeah, we have 27 hour days here! ;) L8R....

Ok guys, so my brain works at a much greater speed than my fingers do. I'm no touch typist, I'm very fast at hunt and peck. I can probably do about 30-35 words by pecking my keyboard. I do read and re-read what I type and fix any errors that I make before posting, this one just happened to slip by my editing.

There are times when I wish we DID have a few more than 24 hours in a day. Oh well.... You know, if the moon was much closer to us than it is right now, we just could have 27 hour days. Problem is, the moon is getting farther away year by year and is in actuality speeding up our days. Bummer :-( L8R....

Don't be sad about that. If we had 27 hours day we would have less days
in our life. less sunny morning, less beautifull sunset, etc.

You didn't really think that they would be back up by EOD Saturday now did you...I have a Bridge to sell to you if you did...

I wouldn't really expect them to go back up before Tuesday, but then Miracles do happen sometimes...

Kind of disappointing. I at least expected a news post (update). Maybe the guy that works Friday thinks it good to keep us informed and the Saturday guy doesn't. That's a joke..... Or maybe it wasn't?
