Trouble again.

Assimilators 1,3,4 just went down in the last hour or so. I'm suspending network activity once again..... sigh.....

I'm gonna do the same - but since I work away all week, that's not ideal. I'll keep an eye in here to see what develops.

And I'll enjoy my credits at the end of the week!

I am really starting to believe that Kryten may have some kind of serious hardware issue. Power supply, hard drive, cooling fan failure, RAM gone flaky, bad cable, sumpthin' that keeps taking it down. Or some corrupted OS files. There has to be a root cause. In my past experience, when unexplained errors of this nature start to happen more frequently, it usually means sumpthin's gettin' ready to blow up. Just a theory on my part, but when the poor thing can't even stay on an even keel for 24 hours since the last reboot......
Does Eric have any theories about the problem yet? I'm sure the poor fellow has got to be getting tired of pushing the reset button lately. I know that server upgrades are on the table pending funding, but wouldn't you think there has to be some underlying problem other than just a heavy workload?
Not trying to harp on the issue, mind you, I am as understanding as anybody about the situation. I just hope that Eric can get it sorted soon.

The kitties wish they could help (they have asked me to send another donation on their behalf). I'll be sending another one in the next week or two, just wish I had a little more company in that department. In the meantime, good luck, Eric.

I wish Kryten would just behave. I just joined 3 weeks ago and I'm having fun trying to build my RAC but this really puts a damper on it.

No uploads at all and worse yet I can't make any milk(powdered) for breakfast as the water pipes here are frozen(26F outside).

To increase work units in cache, change you preference's relating to how often your computer automatically contacts the servers increase to a couple of days and you'll get all the WU's in the world.

Good stuff, thanks for that, I've changed it now and it's taken down another 12 wu's.

Thanks again.

In this case, it probably ISN'T berkeley's fault... Cogent probably went down again. (for those who haven't read the start of the thread, Cogent is the (commercial) networking company that all SETI flows thru on its way to/from Berkeley. They are having some sort of problem [possibly intermittant, which is why uploads suddenly became possible yesterday] on the upload side. [to Berkeley])

I think they're going down because not enuf WU's are coming in to keep them busy... If you read the explanation on the "server status" page, "not running" can be caused by EITHER "Program failed" OR "ran out of work" OR "(the project is down)" (direct quotes from the page)

In this case, I think the assimilators are running out of work.

I have, in the past, expressed concern that Kryten seemed to be overloaded...

These problems have been happening lately after the crew has left for the weekend.

Here’s a couple things I think might be happening:

1. Has anyone considered that maybe after they leave the janitor comes b-bop’n in, plugs in his nifty buffer, squirts a little liquid wax on the floor, hits the switch, and zappppppp.

2. Is someone forgetting to unplug the coffee maker before they leave and later that night: zapppppppp.

3. Is someone forgetting to turn the bathroom light off and later that night: zappppppp

4. Did Matt leave one of his amplifiers plugged in by mistake and later that night: zappppppppp

5. The pesky light that has been flickering for weeks, that you have refused to change, cause you need a ladder, and latter that night: zapppppppppp

Just something to consider, ya never know…lol

At this moment Eric has taken Kryten offline to reboot

In the Uploads Thread I identified that 3:44am PST 11:44 UTC was the first occurrence I could find of when it started. As Kryten handles Uploads/Downloads or millions of entry's in a log file/day to track the time it started can be a bit tough.

If you have something such as a validate error that you want looked at to track the problem you need to identify which result for example

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=455780864

Then people can look (including Eric) and help determine what the real problem is.

Now the purpose of the Panic Mode On Thread, was to come up with something off the wall silly to kill a few minutes while everyone was waiting for something to happen at the Seti Lab

Regards

Pappa

Nah, all of those things produce power surges, (except the fluorescent light - that also produces RF interference) and I'm assuming (and think I read on another page here) that surge protectors are installed. (if not full Uninteruptable Power Sources [UPS])
