Okay, I downloaded Seti @ Home last night, then when I was looking around today I saw BOINC, and it looked cool, so I downloaded it. Do I now uninstall the main SET@Home software or what's the deal? Do I run both SETI and BOINC at the same time?

Now I have an additional question. Is SETI@Home eventually going to get rid of the main 'classic' version and just use BOINC or what?

You can run both simultaneously if you wish, although s@h classic on Windows will take most of the CPU time due to the different priorities set on Windows.

Until Boinc development and system debug settles down a little more, I'd advise to stay with s@h classic for a week or so yet.

Then stop s@h classic and pick up with Boinc.

THanks.. and is the reason I'm not connecting anywhere on Boinc because of the Snap App thing that says they're down for the night? Or is it just me that can't get any work from Seti@BOINC?

Yes, although no time has been set for when s@h classic is to be abandoned.

There are still teething problems with Boinc. s@h classic will only be stopped once Boinc is proven robust enough to take all the active 0.5 Million s@h users.

If their servers don't have access to their database, then they don't know about you or anyone else...

The SnapAppliance is central to the Boinc servers' operation. People will have to run on their cached WUs for the moment until the Snap is back.

if both programs are running at the same time then boinc will take all of the cpu from the old seti client (at least in my experience) so any work that the old client has will never get completed as long as boinc has work to do. boinc is very nifty because it lets you join many projects and divide up the time between them, so i would recommend it if you have other interests that you would like to help out (currently the biggest projects on boinc are seti@home, climateprediction.net, predictor@home, and lhc@home... although predictor and lhc are currently not taking new registrations because they are still testing). being able to run multiple projects is very good because seti on boinc tends to run out of work from time to time (the old seti system will hand out the same work unit over and over if it doesn't have anything new to send out, this nifty new version only hands each unit out 3 times to make sure there are no errors, and will only send it out more if it discovers an error).

anyway, the short answer to your question is, no, they won't both do work at the same time... lol

It depends if you have a HyperThreading (HT) computer. If you do then you can run one instance of Seti Classic and one instance of Seti Boinc, or 2 instances of Boinc, to get the most work done. If you dont have a HT machine then I'd suggest staying with the older version of Seti for now.

Yes currently Boinc is down. You can still crunch seti boinc WU's if you have them but if you dont you can only get work using the older Seti@Home (refered as Seti Classic) client. The Work Units come from the same pool but in boinc each is only analyzed 3 times while in Classic they get sent out an indefinate amount of times.

I run a HT with XP Pro and Seti Classic gets the first priority for Cpu 1 and then Boinc gets CPU 2. If I run both with Boinc set to 2 cpu's then Classic still gets cpu 1, boinc gets cpu 2 and any left over cpu time goes to the 2nd boinc instance running; very slowly but there is visible progress. I used to run one instance of classic and boinc but now that Ive reached my classic goal I run 2 instances of boinc.

At startup when they would auto-load the Classic app always loaded first. I dont know if this is normal or not.
