Hi

I've just "upgraded" from classic

since I have installed BOINC 3 hours ago nothing has happened - the messages tab claims that WU are being downloaded, but no data is flowing

Am I missing something? Is there a website that would tell me that there is a problem on the server or there is no data?

Does this often happen?

Should I go back to classic?

The default settings on a new install are to suspend when user is active. So if you sit there watching it nothing will happen. You can right click on the icon and select run always to get things moving.

Well, I gave it 90 minutes - nothing has happened, not even a message saying that it is contacting the server

this is all i get:
--- - 2004-09-02 23:14:03 - Starting BOINC client version 4.05 for windows_intelx86
SETI@home - 2004-09-02 23:14:03 - Project prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults
SETI@home - 2004-09-02 23:14:03 - Host ID is 161158
--- - 2004-09-02 23:14:03 - General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 2004-09-02 19:18:46)
--- - 2004-09-02 23:14:03 - General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults

it is not even running as a process

any ideas?

Make sure that under the file menu BOINC is set to "run based on preferences" or "run always" and also that network activity is allowed. Then in the projects tab highlight Seti at home and right click and choose update. You should then get something like;

SETI@home - 2004-09-02 20:25:38 - Sending request to scheduler: http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
SETI@home - 2004-09-02 20:25:41 - Scheduler RPC to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded

If you dont have work it should start downloading with a message such as "requesting xxxx seconds of work".

And then..............

Actually the update I just did failed with a "no schedulers responding" message so you may be out of luck at the moment. Give it a try anyway

If you are up for a little bit of frustration stay with BOINC. There are minor problems and the system as a whole is effectively still in Beta, this includes all of the projects. I would recommend that you join the other available projects so that if work is not available in one, you will get work elsewhen ... :)

At the moment all you could join is climateprediction.net; though Predictor should be updating to version 4 soon. And they may open up for new accounts ...

With CPDN, if you have one work unit you have work enough for 3 computers, or is it four? :)

Because of problems in the last month or two I did go back to Classic on all of my machines, but I have 3 back to BOINC now ... Just be patient ...

In the mean time ... click on my banner and start reading! I have over 250 pages of material about BOINC and the projects. And I am working on additional material, updating existing and enabling multi-project examples ...

If there is something there that is confusing ... clcik on the mailbox icons ...

Many thanks - it will give me something to read while I'm waiting for BOINC to spring into action!

As a matter of interest there are problems with CPDN too - there are loads of people experiencing problems running the model (me included), run time fortran errors

So my PC which was happily crunching 4-5 units on SETI classic a day is now doing nothing - still, that's progress
