For posterity, why don't we state our prediction for First Contact (let's assume it hasn't happened yet - call it Next Contact of you believe in area 51 etc).

I say First Contact will be in 56 hours time, that is, 9:33 PM GMT Tuesday 19 December 2006.

Failing that, assuming a slight error in my calculations, in 56 years time, that is 1:33 PM GMT 2062

I say that if we never make contact, Beethoven is right and we should contact each other.

Ground control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you....

Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do.

I say never. The big rock out there with our name on it hits us first, then we go the way of the dino's.

Yup ... I agree ...
Except there are people out there today who dress up in funny pseudo futuristic gear - which puzzles me a lot.
In an age when supposedly man can go at a trillion miles an hour (and when he wants, twitch the speed-knob to Warp 11!), zip through 'worm-holes', by-pass 'black holes' and find an infinite number of other 'civilisations' - ALL of which, with certain cosmetic differences - bear a striking resemblance to US on this Planet (and ALL of which speak perfect English - as well as their own decipherable "language"), please tell me WHY these people would want to dress up in 1980's materials? Surely it is the equivalent of the Neanderthal man dressing up in Saks 5th Avenue!
People sometimes have to stop watching television programmes and go outside their doors and get a life!

I am going to predict sometime in 2010 we will learn we truly are not alone in this Universe.

Some time during the economic boom period after WWIII

Sometimes I think we are alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we are not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

Some time during the economic boom period after WWIII

Is that before or after China joins the EEU (European Economic Union) ?

Probably after China refuses to join.
By the time that some people in the hierarchy of the EU consider that it may be economically advantageous for a stronger 'economic-linking', China will be in a powerful enough position to not need it, they will already have access to their own economic spheres of interest (Russia, Japan, India, Oceania, South America).
I predict that there will be a number of proxy wars in the aftermath of economic disagreements.

But on the bright side, after the dust has settled, and infrastructure has been rebuilt, we should be in a better position to get down to seriously looking for ET.

I reckon a signal will be found some time in the next 100 years.

May be the first contact will come when every country on earth is on the same economic level - and instead of UNO etc., a united government for the entire planet has been erected...
