Msattler, see my friend's new little kitty, meet little Rafael Fire Fox: Click the pic She lost her Maine Coon Cool only a couple of months ago very suddenly. He had a heart disease, which is inherited, so she's getting a new little kitten from the cattery, and here he is, little Rafael. This was Cool Click the pic This is the only pic I took of him, he didn't wanted to have his pic taken that day I had my camera with me to visit them, Cool, his big brother Lucky, his little sister Gimme (all Maine Coons) and their human Emma. So a new little mod to the kitty mod squad is here. "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

These have probably been mentioned/asked before but: 1.) Do the Mods have the ability to edit any post, or is their only tool to hide/delete it? If they can edit it, it might be a better strategy to "blank out" salty language, blatant ad hominems, etc. in a post that otherwise has some value, rather than just can it. They could add a Mod Note at the end explaining that. Call it adjusting the message instead of killing the messenger. This might work well on "XBox" posts. 2.) If they are just reading posts and come across a thread which looks to be degenerating into a Flame War, perhaps popping in with a "Tone It Down" warning would be better. I have seen this done in the past, but it doesn't seem to me like it's a general mod policy overall. These also have the advantage of leaving a "paper trail" when readers come across the thread later. This would help show folks what the preferred decorum level is for this community. Of course I'm not saying that a "pre-emptive strike" on a post or thread is necessary at times, but the main thing is to demonstrate to the community as a whole that the rules will be enforced in a fair and even handed manner, without the appearance of draconian censorship. Also as msattler said, if people (both OP and responders) would exercise civilized behaviour in a public forum in the first place, most of this wouldn't be necessary at all. It is possible to take someone to task for comments they make which one disagrees with in a constructive rather than destructive manner. Just my 2 cents. ;-) Alinator Just my 2 cents. |

I just discovered tha answer to the mod 'problems' (actually, they are not the problem)........ I was gonns post a comment, then I didn't. Self moderation seems to be the prime number!!! Worked for me, but I'll bet that within 2 hours, this thread will be bopped by someone who cannot contain themselves. We are our own worst enemy. BTW, have you got your monitor problems worked out. Do the Mods have the ability to edit any post, or is their only tool to hide/delete it? OK, that's definitely a shortcoming for the builtin forum package. I guess the only workaround would be for the Mod to copy it out, can the original, edit and repost it. Not very elegant. ;-) Alinator |

Do the Mods have the ability to edit any post, or is their only tool to hide/delete it? It's been said the problem w/that would be some mod changing something, then someone that's been causing problems would be able to come back & say, "That isn't what I meant at all!" I can see where that approach wouldn't work. In short, we are our own worst enemy. Account frozen... |

Do the Mods have the ability to edit any post, or is their only tool to hide/delete it? I don't think it's very practical either. The mods have enough to do without becoming copy editors. It's neither in or out. Move on. Read next post. Account frozen... |

Do the Mods have the ability to edit any post, or is their only tool to hide/delete it? Agreed, however in my OP I said the edit method would only be useful for very simple things like "foul" language, vitriolic personal attacks, etc. in a post which otherwise had a valid and permitted premise. In this case, for a poster to come back and say this isn't what was intended would be a sign of trolling because this is a written medium. So by definition anything you write and post is a deliberate action, not a slip of the tongue so to speak. Also, since the "meat" would be left, disputing something like "This !@#$%^& software caused me to loose X credits and Y seconds of CPU time!" being edited to "This XXXXXXXX .......!" with a trailing note "Reason for Edit: Language" is nitpicking and another sign of trolling. ;-) Although like any tool it could be abused, but it seems to me that the mods should have as many tools at their disposal so they can make the most measured response to a given situation. Alinator <Followup edit> It's been my personal observation that with the "Can or Ban" toolset available, half the arguements arise from having a "minor" infraction result in the post disappearing completely. I've participated in many forums (both web based and newsreader based) where measured response results in if not fewer "flareups" at least shorter running ones. |

The answer to the mod problems...........Is cats. Sorry, who ever said that a thread had to serve a purpose? After some of the things I've encountered in this forum? Come on now. It's my thread, and I am very happy with the direction it took. Cat people seem to have a different outlook on some things than others. A more gentle one, usually. That cat herding commercial is a classic, I wonder if there is some background on the net somewhere about how they filmed it... Been away all day, so in reference to some of the other posts in the thread.... The pic of Bouncer under the blankets made me smile, Rafael is a doll, figured out my new widescreen monitor problem, and LMAO about walking around town trying to summon a cat with a pair of scissors (can you really summon a cat?). Yeah, it's been a good thread. Thanx, all. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

As you wish, my friend. The answer to the mod problems...........Is Cats! LMAO As always, cats are answers to a lot in life. And self-restraint is the answer too, which the first post in this thread was about, which some here really should learn to exhibit. "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |
