Hi All,
I have experienced a brand new issue tonight. I had 60 WU's waiting to crunch on my box and 4 ready to upload. I was working on the Web and I started recieving a "McAfee Virus Update". After about 20 minutes I noticed it was still running and it was hung at 46% completed. I let it be and tried to upload the Wu's that were complete, and it kept "Backing off"/ I disabled Network connection, restarted my computer. When I restarted, The McAfee window popped up and stated I had received a update and said it would be installed. Well apparently while it showed being "Hung" it was actaully processing. I let it finish, and went to Boinc to upload the WU's. When I opened the tab for "Work" everything on the page, 56 units showed "Ready to report" with no times next to them. The other 4 that were complete had times. I uploaded the 4 workunits, and then hit manual update, and all work was wiped off the work tab. I received 2 WU's to crunch and then got deferred for 10 more minutes, which I am waiting through now. The reason I say McAfee, is because everything else was the same with no change.

Any Help would be Apreciated.

Warm Regards,

Rocky

P.S. Sorry to be so long winded, I figured this topic needed to be explained in full.

You can try something. Delete the last virus defenition you have downloaded
restart, start BOINC and make a manual McAfee update and see what happen
with the two units you currently have.

If the proble happen again then you know for sure that there is a conflict.

That's all I can come up with for now.

Thanks for the quick respose, sometimes i forget there are people still up at what is "My Late hour of 1:45 AM.

I've been running BOINC with McAfee Enterprise 7.10 and it's EPolicy enforcer thing at work for quite some time and so far haven't noticed anything weird like that happening. McAfee checks for updates once a day while BOINC is running. Running XP Pro w/ SP2 at work.

At home, it and Norton Antivirus 2004 haven't clashed as of yet either. Running XP Home w/ SP2 at home.

Hi All,
Well it has done it for the second time. It is not when the computer checkes for updates, it is when it is actually downloading the updates. I was trying to upload WU's while the download was in proess, McAfee hung. Again after restarting the machine I got the McAfee message "update ready to install" and when I went to my Work tab, all both WU's I had were ready to report. I reported them, and the schedualer succeeded, however, I cannot gte additional WU's because I have reached my daily quota. So unfortunatly my fastest machine will be without work until the AM hours of 9/3 it looks like.

I don't know what comes next.
The McAfee update was Build 8.0.41
Engine 4.3.20
Dat Version 4.0.4388
Dat File was created on 8/25/2004

Everyone have a great night, and a Better Tomorrow.

Regards,

Rocky

Ok so at least now we are sure about the conflict. I realy don't
know what it could be but for now you should disable automatic
update and be sure to quit BOINC when you manualy update.

It looks like the problem come from BOINC rather than McAfee.
The problem start when you tried to upload and it resulted in
McAfee hunging. The question is what could makes the unprocessed
WU to become ready to report when McAfee hung ? Really strange.

For sure it is related to data transfer. Where is the link between
Boinc uploadind and McAfee downloading ?

Good luck on this one !

I have the same problem but with F-secure V5.50. Works fine on windows2000 but with XP sp1 the system hangs when I run the antivirus program togheter with Boinc. Also all of my WU´s was deleted.

AAAAAARGGG... (sorry for that but it had to come out...)

It seems to confirm that the problem come from BOINC since your using a
different antivirus with most probably different setting than Rocky.

I won't take any chances and I will disable all automatic update on
my machine and make sure that BOINC is not running when I manually do one.

I have McAfee Viruscan and Personal Firewall Plus online versions and have not had this sort of problem.

Perhaps you need to reinstall McAfee from scratch then let them update.

If you have XP and SP2, I wonder if this could be a problem related to SP2.

I also have McAfee Viruscan & Firewall V8. I can auto-update and upload/download seti ok. (I have another seti "dropping out leaving boinc by itself due to heavy disk activity from other sources" problem).

Hi All,
To answer the preceding Posts, Yes I have XP and SP2. I did not turnoff auto update last night because I ASSUMED, that there would be a lag in the next update. However, I began uploading my WU's that completed last night, and about the same time McAfee came up downloading an update. The uploads were successful, so on to the Project tab to manually update. Thats where the problems begin. McAfee became hung at 17%, and the WU's that began to download which were 40, are gone off of the transfer page, are in the work tab waiting to be reported. I am stopping here, because I know as soon as I try to manually update, they will all be gone again. McAfee is still stuck at 17%, and I did a complete new install of McAfee last night.

Regards, and Thanks All,
Rocky

Hi After further investigating the hang with McAfee, the only error I recieve when McAfee freezes is, "Stack Dump Oversized".
Can anyone tell me what that means.

Thanks in Advance,

Regards,

stack overflow exploit ... Sends an oversized URL to TCP

causes destination host to send
oversized packets -> connection

has a stack overflow which ... Intro to TCP/IP

and more can be found.

Rocky

while "crashing", are you having the gui with enabled or disable network access? if enabled, try with settings network disable from the boinc gui,
while doing the task with mcafee

==> tell mcafee to NOT scan, exclude the scaning the boinc folder
or
==> under drive:..boinc..slot..0. there is a "zero" length file called boinc_lockfile,
as the name puttes on, this file is locked, in other words, this file is "used" by boinc, and when the virus scanner try to access it, it could not read the file or having perhaps a problem with it.

my scanner(s) are not causing bad times, norton and antivir XP

It looks like this file is new under 4.x, perhaps wrong.

under seti 1 we had the lock.sah

goodluck

I ditched McAfee a long time ago for Norton. However, McAfee has a way of changing firewall settings and permissions without so much as a hello. Before you do anything drastic I would suggest that you go take a look.

Just my two cents...

It have something to do with memory and net connection.
Here is the link between Boinc uploading and McAfee downloading
I was wondering about. The problems is for sure related to something
buggy in Boinc.
