When I get an error message, all computations stop until I click 'OK'. For example, an error occurred at 1 am and I clicked OK at 9 am at which point the processor started up again, but only after losing 8 hours.

Can we get error messages that allow the next process to start (i.e., without focus)?

On second thought, I'm not sure what good the error message is. It is not like I'm going to edit the WU or anything. It may be easier simply to remove those message boxes.

What kind of error message was it? The kind that has the box "send" and "don't send"? If so that is a Windows message and not a Boinc one.

I haven't seen one of these from SETI or BOINC in over a year. I have seen them from other projects.

1) Exactly what did the error message say?
2) Are you certain that it was SETI running?

I do not remember the exact message. It was an OK-only message box. The processor was not running until I hit OK. The task manager verified that the CPU was not loaded for quite a while. I looked through the messages to verify when the error occurred (an error occurred at 1am on a work-unit, then at 9am when I hit OK, that workunit started uploading). I only run SETI because I can not seem to get credit with other projects.

I get errors a couple of times per month, so the next time it happens I'll take careful note.

Thanks for your questions.

Dialogs that pop up that stop processing are not what the project wants for two reasons.

1) The obvious one - it wastes CPU time.
2) Somewhat less obvious - the sort of error that the OS displays a message box for is one the developers would be interested in - and they are not seeing it.

I got the error three times:
Caption: Microsoft Visual C++ runtime Library
Body: Runtime Error!
Program: ...athome.berkeley.edu\\setiathome_5.15_windows_intelx86.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

OK button.

For the fifth week in a row I got a malfunctioning work unit within an hour of leaving work for the weekend. During the week everything runs great. Statistically, there must be something that happens when I leave that causes one or two workunits to get corrupted. Any ideas? To my knowledge, the computer has no way of knowing that I'm gone because I don't log out or anything. Also, during the week, the computer runs fine through the night.

Hi Charlie,

Could you unhide your computers so I can see the results where this error occured?

Thanks,

Eric

Eric,
I changed the preferences. It may be a while before the computer contacts the server.

Thanks for your help.

Charlie
