Message 462042 - Posted: 19 Nov 2006, 22:44:33 UTC

I lose about 20 to 25% of my work units to "client error" - "computer error" whatever.
I am running 3 machines and have only ever had this on my iMac Pentium dual core machine.
I know this has been discussed in other forums but no one seems to be able to say "Well, push this button you idiot".

Any suggestions - links etc. that might fix this.

Seti cruncher since 1999 and have seriously thought about going back to the flying toasters.
Regards ....Noel

Hard to say, why the results are not validated good. I have never had any problems
with my MacBook. I get 100% validated.
Your hosts are hidden, so I can not look into your results, and look why the WUs would not be validated.
Is it posible to unhide your computers ? - If not, could you please look at the Error fields (stderr out) of the WUs and look if there is alreay the same error, and post the (different) outputs here.

I would say no, I can only see your hosts, benchmark, disk space and the returned results, but no ip address or hostname...

I have checked again and the "Should SETI@home show your computers on its web site?" is checked yes.

I may have forgotten to update: I have done this now.
I have had another two computer / client errors this morning - Melbourne, Aust. time of course.

Could you post some relevant portions of the message log? It might help us diagnose the problem.

Noel,

Go here, edit, change option "Should SETI@home show your computers on its web site?" to yes. SAVE. Nothing needs to be changed on the BOINC manager.

I checked my preferences as suggested.

I have have confirmed that as far as I am concerned the world can see my computers.

I also cut and paste the errors in past messages; is this helpful?

It happens a lot including: Mon Nov 20 16:23:56 2006||Can't rename state file: Error -1
Mon Nov 20 16:23:56 2006||Couldn't write state file: system rename

Can I assume you may not have an answer for this problem?

If so I will close the question.

Thanks for your efforts anyway.

Hi Noel,

to get around the computers-are-hidden-problem you can also post the Computer-ID of the affected computer, which is shown on the Your Computers side. It's the number in the first column of this page (the "Computer-ID" column).

The "Couldn't write state file: system rename" error is mostly due to an unremoved file lock (e.g. a file wasn't closed correctly after a write to this file). This can probably be fixed with a computer restart. If not, check if one of the files named "client_state.xml" or "client_state_prev.xml" is write protected. Also, make sure you rsp. BOINC have full access to the BOINC folder and it's subfolders.

About the 0x83 errors you receive: Well, seems to me like an incompatibility with the graphics drivers or even with the graphics libraries installed on your system. Does this error occur when the Screen saver kicks in? Since I'm not very familiar with Macs, you may also post this in the Macintosh forum. Maybe one of the guys over there has an answer to this.

Regards
Andy

Hello Andy,
My computer i.d. is 2450623.
The Mac. is shut down every night (correctly of course), it is using the latest version O.S.10.4.8
Boinc is boinc_5.4.9_macOSX_universal and I have never "played" with it.

I will get errors whether it is in use or has been idle for ages, I have the screen saver come on after 4 minutes and monitor sleep after 30 minutes.
Sometimes it will have trouble existing the screen saver but rare compared to the errors I get.

Regards ....Noel

You are getting error codes #131, this means:
ERR_FILE_TOO_BIG -131 file size too big an output file was bigger than max_nbytes
I have no idea what would cause that, or how to fix it.
On a side note I have 22 pc's here at home running Boinc and I do nto shut any down, even when I go on vacation.
I have more than 22 pc's, some my wife is picky about and doesn't like the software on. And yes my electric bill is high.
