I understand that BOINC is supposed to have some kind of "auto-upgrade" feature. Should I go ahead and install the current non-GUI equipped client on all my workstations and expect that the auto-upgrade process will install GUI capable one when it is available?

The auto-upgrade stuff, currently, is just auto-upgrading the actual crunching part of the application, not the core boinc client...

So, it won't auto-update to the GUI version. The GUI part is actually going to be a seperate program you run after you launch boinc... it'll tie in to the gui_rpc socket to do its dirty work. :-)
