Message 443618 - Posted: 25 Oct 2006, 19:44:06 UTC

SETI@home asked me by e-mail to rejoin, but as far as I can tell, I never left. SETI, however, says it's been 47 days since it heard from me. My BOINC preferences say I have dedicated 66.67% of my resources to SETI, but I rarely see the screensaver running. Usually the climate program, to which I only dedicated 33% of my resources, seems to be in process. Do I need to do something to reconnect to SETI and if so, what? Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Sharon Miller

With your computers hidden, it's difficult to see what OS you run and what your last BOINC version was.

So please, do tell. Also tell what your other project is.

Thank you for answering so quickly. I am only a small step above technologically illiterate, so I didn't know my computer (singular) was hidden. I have a Dell running Windows XP home with Dimension E310 Intel Pentium 4. Does that give you enough OS information? If you need more, you'll have to ask specific questions, which I will do my best to answer since I'm very grateful for help. As near as I can tell, BOINC is client version 5.2.13 for windows_intelx86. Again, thank you.

Windows XP and BOINC 5.2.13

Do you run any other projects? Like any CPDN version? Or other long running projects?
If you only used Seti, did you ever try an optimized version of Seti? That one can be recognized by having an file called app_info.xml in your \\Boinc\\Projects\\Setiathome.berkeley.edu\\ folder.

If you have such a file, please exit BOINC (File->Exit in Boinc Manager), delete the file. Then open BOINC Manager, Projects tab, Select Seti, Press Reset on the left. Click OK.

Does that work?

Else please post your messages from the messages tab here. All you now have, yes.

BOINC is the only project of that kind I run, and the only change I can remember making in SETI is switching to BOINC. I could find no files in my folder to delete. I did, however, reset SETI from the BOINC Manager and maybe that will restore it to its rightful place -- first in line. I do hope I'm replying properly. I used the reply to this post link. Again, thank you for your help, and for your patience. My only contact with SETI has been signing up so it's good to learn there's a community out there with kind strangers to whom I can appeal for help. Cheers, Sharon

Now you reset Seti, go to your Messages tab in Boinc Manager.
Please click the Copy all messages button, then answer here and right click & paste in the window.

Let's check if you can still get through.

You are back in business for the same project you have been running all this time: CPDN:

It's what I asked what you were running besides Seti. :)
10/25/2006 10:06:20 AM||Suspending work fetch because computer is overcommitted.
10/25/2006 10:06:20 AM||Using earliest-deadline-first scheduling because computer is overcommitted.

Means that your PC thinks it won't ever get to the end of CPDN before the result you run for it goes past its deadline.

Now, there are some workarounds.. but I would first like to ask you to update to BOINC 5.4.11 from here.

Exit BOINC, install this version over your old directory, let it rip. This version of BOINC has an updated Work Scheduler. Let it run with CPDN for at least a further 2 days, then report. Then we can do the workarounds without much trouble.

Plan? Date? :-)

We have a plan and a date. I'll reinstall BOINC when I finish this post and check back Saturday or whenever it's convenient for you. Again thank you for all the help. Sharon
