I'll reply to gregh here since in the previous thread ROM is using troubleshooting the BOINC bug. The point is that yes of course if the FAT is corrupted then technically BOINC did not do it. But this is a public project and surely there is a duty of care to the public to warn them that the current BOINC version has a problem and the result of the problem is not simply BOINC not working but the whole computer stop working? And maybe needing to be taken back "to the shop" for reinstalling Windows? Anyway as I am writing this I see the news msg has been updated to cover both my point and gregh's. Well done ROM! </img> |

"Duty of care" is a great term. If you have not taken a "duty of care" to see that your much loved data is safe from whatever assails it - and that includes simple power outages, mechanical disaster, you name it - then the problem is at your end. After all, when it comes down to it, you CHOSE to install Boinc. If you did so without thinking that any program you may install on your system MAY stuff your Windows completely, then I refer you to the March 28th, 2002 Windows critical update which stuffed most XP/2K machines. If the data on your machine isnt that precious then either way it shouldnt be a worry if you lose it, just an inconvenience. The rule is - protect yourself and dont blame others when they may make an honest mistake in their program that causes a reaction which ultimately kills your machine. If you protect yourself, you have nothing much to worry about. Greg. |
