I exited Boinc 4.05, then installed and launched 4.06 . Right away I was able to manually update three completed WU's that were left from 4.05, already a huge improvement.

I have another WU that should be finishing in a couple hours, I'll let it do its thing automaticlly and keep yall posted.

Yes, I get that from Boincview when I don't start a client with the
-allow_remote_gui_rpc parameter

> Okay, I've built a new build, BOINC CC 4.06.

Downloaded & installed 4.06 over the top of 4.05.

Fired up OK, uploaded previously completed Work Unit.

SETI@home - 2004-09-01 17:33:08 - Started upload of 25ap04aa.23553.20882.36058.37_0_0
SETI@home - 2004-09-01 17:33:11 - Finished upload of 25ap04aa.23553.20882.36058.37_0_0
SETI@home - 2004-09-01 17:33:11 - No data transferred
(That no data transferred glitch again).

It's continued with the existing Work Units i had & downloaded several more with no problems (and as fast as it's ever been for me).

4.06 has been running for 10 minutes now, system still OK, mouse not freezing etc.
Will check back tonight after squash- that should give it time enough to process about 2 WUs & try for several more.

Hopefully Rom's work has paid off.
*fingers crossed*

Update- been running for 30+min, downloaded more workunits, updated some changed preferences; still going OK.
Tentatively optimistic...

I guess they'll have to check that the new source doesn't break XP and Nix machines now.

slightly off topic... noticed something odd with 4.05 running on XP with sah and cpdn. Haven't had any major problems but twice in the last 24h the sah client has stopped processing after taking over from cpdn. the computer doesn't crash but nothing is processed and system idle goes up to 99% until I stop and restart boinc. Is this related to the 98 problem??

I've had the Win98 problems with 4.05 too, and don't really have anything to add on the main issues. One thing I've seen that nobody's yet mentioned, though:

After my first 4.05 crash, every time I started BOINC 4.05 (I don't do this any more!) I was getting messages from ZoneAlarm saying 'boinc_gui is trying to act as a server' and 'boinc_gui is trying to access the trusted zone'. I didn't get this from 3.20, and I didn't get it from 4.05 when I installed it (i.e. before the first upload and the first triggering of the slowdown/crash problem).

Allowing or denying this access didn't seem to make any difference to Boinc's behaviour.

I'm hoping this will either turn out to be normal v4 practice or that it will go away when I download v4.06 or higher (I'm going to wait a little while before doing this, as I don't have much time to devote to Boinc right now).

Anyone else seen anything similar?

Hello, All!
How's it going? I have also had the problem with version 4.05 and just installed 4.06. If you do not hear from me you may assume it is running fine. I am running a Compag7120US, 1.5 GHz Pentium 4, 128KB memory and 60 Gig hard drive and Windows ME. When I installed and ran version 4.05, I went to bed with it running. Woke up and had to hard reset computer. When started, it appeared that it had finished a work unit and then froze, as it showed about 48 seconds on the new work unit [It takes that long to load all my programs at start-up]. The first unit had taken about 7 hours, average for this machine. I had disabled network access because I use a dial-up at the moment, so should not have been trying to transfer anything. The second unit finished in only 7 minutes, and then the mouse slowed down, etc.. CRTL-A-D restarted machine. Saw that the second unit had finished already and network access had also been disabled at that time. I am about an hour into the next work unit and will write again if anything bad happens when finished with this unit.
I have a stupid question. I understand that you were committing all your time to solving the bug, but why didn't you program BOINC not to send any work units to anyone running 98 and/or ME but to send a message instead, maybe something like "Compatibility issues with Windows 98/ME. Please check home page for details."? and that way people would have known what was going on. You have the information on what machines we are using and what platforms, etc.. I guess I am asking why, since you had the info, you didn't use it? Why else do you have all of that information about each of our computers, if not to warn us about such bugs and things?
I am going to keep classic on my new laptop for now, even though it has XP on it. Besides, I hope you leave classic up for a while as I am above 4,100 units and would like to hit 5,000 before ending it, although you will probably shut down classic long before that. Oh, well, such is life! As my Mom used to say, "They get you coming and they get you going, and if you stand still they get you twice, so you had better keep moving!" hahaha

P.S.: Is there anyone there I could e-mail an idea I have for a web site with both scientific and commercial uses? I have several ideas for different projects but I am having trouble finding anyone who will listen to them. I also have an idea for using lightning for electrical power, which would be free energy, no fuel or conversion costs. I just do not have the resources and even after going back to college and getting a degree, it is difficult to find someone who will take you seriously. I am an old hippie and I am not looking for money, just want to help the World, ya know? Thank you for any help you can provide in this area. Love, Peace and Perception

So my first wu with 4.06 has completed and the next one started with no crashes, also there has been some uploading and downloading. Hooray!

Hi All,
Is the upgrade to 4.06 for everyone or just those using 98,98SE. I ask because I see post here from people that upgraded that had Win XP. My XP appears to be acting fine with the exception of "Short WU's" which is posted on a different thread. Is this an upgrade for everyone?

Regards,

Rocky

4hrs and counting.

No hints of slowing down, crashing... 75% through one work unit, has connected and returned others.

The 4.05 client didnt last 30 seconds ... so things are looking good.

Nice work ROM.

Rom,

I've downloaded and installed 4.06 on my 98SE machine. It seems to run well, time will tell.

What is the other file for and what do I do with it?

The .pdb files are Reference file for debugging errors.
Unzip and put them in the Boinc directory [folder], IE c:\program files\boinc.
