Why is it that I don't have any work? It has been working good for about five weeks.

At this moment I write this, all splitters are off and there is no work to distribute.

Yet since you've had this problem for 5 weeks, it's got to be something else.
Do you run multiple projects?
When you open Boinc Manager, projects tab, select Seti, press Update, go to Messages tab, do you see something like this:
-- |SETI@home|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks) ???

Do you have any warnings in your messages that you are in Earliest Deadline Mode first?

To help us along, please exit BOINC.
Restart it.
Open Boinc Manager.
Projects tab.
Select Seti.
Press Update.
Go to Messages tab.
Press Copy all messages.
Paste them in an answer window here.

Seems like the servers have had a problem. This is being discussed in the Number Crunching forum. It looks like the system is coming back up slowly. Just be patient for a few more hours and you should be getting more work. We don't know what is going on right now since none of the staff have dropped by to let us know. Keep checking in the number crunching forum for possible news, or check the main site homepage. Usually if it is serious they will announce it there.

@ Ageless, you just misread his post. He says it's been working "good for five weeks".

Message 417427 - Posted: 8 Sep 2006, 22:53:33 UTC

From the Seti Technical News:

September 8, 2006 - 22:00 UTC
We are out of work to send out, and probably will be for the whole weekend. Here's why:

Recently Sun donated a new server (see below for details) which we decided to make our new science database. Our current science database works just fine, but is on an older (slower) system with a used set of fibre channel disks that frequently fail for one reason or another.

We finally got the new server set up to our liking last week and started unloading all the database tables this week from the old system. The increased disk activity caused the aforementioned disks to completely freak out last night. We had to shut down the science database this morning and we are still in the process of recovering the system.

While most of the BOINC backend functions without any dependency on the science database, the splitters and assimilators do not. The assimilators being off are no big deal - this just means a delay in moving results on disk into the database. But when the splitters are off no new work can be created, and our queue of work to send already ran dry this afternoon.

It is highly unlikely we will get the database back up before the end of the day, or anytime this weekend. Even if we do, our highest priority will be to unload the remaining few database tables before the disks crash again.

If you want to keep your computers busy, you can always work on multiple projects.

(Thanks, Jim-R... I did misread it. :))

I am still gettig no work from project. There is nothing on the home page.I haven't had any work since Sept 4. I assume there is a big queue and eventually new work will re-appear.

Ther eis a notice about the database going down from the new server settling in.

You just need to read the home page, there is a link at the top of the page. It says they have been moving to some new hardware and had 'issues'. They should be on their way back now though.

The latest response seems to be dated 12 September. Today is 26 September and I still cannot get any new work packets from SETI. Does anyone know why?

Without you showing some messages from your messages tab, it's only guessing.

So please exit BOINC, restart it, then copy and paste all the messages from the messages tab here. Let's see if that gives any clues.

I don't think this will do any good because all of yesterday's messages went away when I shut the comuter down last night.

I does enough. :-)

First check in Boinc Manager if Seti isn't Suspended. Open Boinc Manager, Projects tab, Select Seti@Home. If you have a Resume button on the left, click it.
If the button says Suspend, don't click it.

I take it that Einstein has been running all this time and that if you try to update Seti, that you get the following answer from the scheduler:
(Not requesting new work or reporting results)

This is BOINC's way of telling you that for the moment Einstein has a large debt.
I don't know how many hours a day your computer runs BOINC, but when projects run, they accumulate debt. If you are running two projects (or more), BOINC will try to divide the CPU equally over those projects. But it can happen that for some reason one project gets more attention from the CPU (about to miss the deadline, for instance), so that project won't be crunched until the other project(s) have had time to catch up on CPU time.

My guess is that that's what happening to you. Nothing to worry about, eventually Boinc will ask work from Seti again.

Message 427771 - Posted: 28 Sep 2006, 13:47:38 UTC

I have a Windows system and have not been getting any new
work assigned for the last several days. But this morning,
when I first turned my computer on, BOINC seemed to have seized
control of all the CPU cycles. I was unable to check email
etc. So not knowing any other way to get back my computer,
I ended the BOINC process from the process control window.

I want to volunteer time. But something is wrong and I have
been unable to communicate with the main system.

please help

thanks jdubose@ev1.net

I have similar problems too, 5 WU's are in my list, 5 trying to download. They are all SETI Enhanced, which is not yet downloaded, it is completely waiting in my download list. I will paste only parts of my Messages, because BOINC is now running since 18 hours or so. Hope somebody will find the problem.

Your problem is that you are having trouble connecting to Berkeley. Either your internet connection is bad or you are using a proxy or soemthing. You can see it in the lines I saved above, Boinc can access the reference site but not download units, it says http error. That is an internet error.
You are also crunching for multiple projects, that means it only connects when it needs units from them. Not as often as people that only crunch for only one project. That could become a problem for you if you don't figure this out.

But something is wrong and I have
been unable to communicate with the main system.
please help thanks jdubose@ev1.net

Next time go get another cup of coffee when you first start the machine back up. It needs time to do its thing before you can do your thing. There are lots of little housekeeping chores that need doing, and they take all the cpu cycles until they are done. We who leave our machines on 24/7 don't see it like those that turn their machine off on a daily basis.

Thank you for the help, I found the problem in my Firewall. It have an DNS Cache PlugIn, and one of the security funtions is: "Block extra-long DNS Names(Internet Adresses)" after deactivating this funtion, all was O.K.

One comment: You wrote that the Project tries only to connect when it is his turn to calculate. Ok, but if there is already something waiting in the download-window, BOINC is trying to get these files even when the Projekt is set to "Don't get new work" and "Suspended". I made these settings, for that the other projects can continue their Jobs until I would have seen that the SETI Files are downloaded.

Again, thanks for the help.
