The thing is..later on in life I realized that in the face of something that serious, some people's only defense from the enormity of the event, is humor. No matter how ill timed it may be.

When I was in high school, me and a girlfriend of mine worked at a fast food joint... One night, me, her, and the manager were the only three working when we got robbed at gun point... With a gun pointed at her head, all she could do was laugh laugh laugh throughout the whole episode... It was just her way of dealing with it... ;)
It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . .

I was on DS-9 having a Romulan Ale and chatting with Odo and Sisko when it happened.... (-;<

Seriously, I was at work and didn't know about it until I turned the news on when I got home.... )-:<

I was at work when someone brought in the news. Someone else set up a TV and several of us were able to watch the reruns and reruns and reruns of those 73 seconds.

I remember watching one very large chunk of debris the TV camera followed all the way down to impact with the sea and figuring that was probably the crew capsule.

The rest of the day is a blank for me.

I was in Graduate School. I arrived at the student center just at the time of the launch.

At work, windowless inside office, had my radio on the local National Public Radio station. I'm not sure now whether they broke in on the programming, or picked it up in their normal top of the hour news, but they stayed with the story for quite a while that day, and so did I.

Mr. Mayo's 11th grade Chemistry class taking a test and watching the launch "live" on TV.
I was in complete disbelief at what I saw at first.....then felt my stomach sink & tighten up.
Brought tears to my eyes, as it did most around me.
It was "obviously a major malfunction........"
Worst thing I ever saw in my life until that moment.

Remember watching Columbia's maiden lift-off in school as well.
Had the same reaction when she broke-up.

Me? I was working at the newspaper, (of course) here in Akron.

Didn't hear about it until I got home that evening.
Account frozen...
