In my setting I have answered "no" to the question, "Do work while computer is in use?" Yet SETI keep working away. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

Thanks.

Make sure you save the preferences to the prefs page with the button at the bottom of the page and that you update BOINC (Open Boinc Manager, Projects tab, select Seti, press Update). Also make sure you have BOINC running based on preferences. Check your Activity menu in Boinc Manager for that.

Are you looking for the Icon to go away, or something simular? The BOINC program stays running, even if SETI is stopped. Just making sure you are looking in the BOINC program, and make sure that SETI says Paused, or something simular when you are on your computer. BOINC stays running to watch if you do go away, so it can start SETI back up.

Had to ask, just to make sure.

I am having this issue as well. I have BOINC set to run off of preferences. I have my preferences set to 'Do work while computer is in use? no' and still both processors are maxed, I have a Core 2 Duo machine. I also have 'Do work only after computer is idle for 5 minutes' set.

Thanks

Same here.. NO is may answer.. I hit update.. the preference page shows this clearly.

Looking at the task manager, as I am typing this and doing anything else, seti is taking 90+% of my CPU time!

@Tom Comer and @Earthing

Did you use the “Update” button in the tab “Projects” of the Boinc Manager after having update the preferences at the website?

There is some issue with Boinc that is causing this problem. I have a dozen computers with boinc running properly (i.e. stops computing when the user starts working and waits 3 minutes until resuming).

Today I tried to install boinc w/seti on a few spare machines and the boinc client will begin processing immediately. It doesn't download the profile correctly and seems to use the "local defaults" which is to run all of the time. If you try to do something on the machine, it will not suspend activity. If you don't believe the posters on this thread, try installing it yourself on a spare machine before suggesting the obvious...

I've tried updating the project and even resetting, but the behavior doesn't change.

Is there a workaround with the local XML file to get boinc to process when the machine is not in use?

Yes I have had this same problem, and yes I have tried all the advice here, (of course!) I hope this will be fixed soon.

Take it easy

Same problem. My computer is almost unusable because SETI is eating all the CPU cycles. I shut SETI/BOINC down. I was an early SETI participant. I dropped out several years ago because SETI was hoseing up my computer. I got an email from SETI this morning asking me to set up BOINC so I decided to try again. So far, it was a bad decision. I may try again.

Similar to me here.. couldn't get the Bionic thing to work right about a year ago and dropped out. The the letter, thought I'd give it another go. Now this. In my case, it isn't making my computer unusable since the task is set to the lowest priority. What I did find is that my laptop battery live is really hurt. I unplugged it and took it to a meeting. Despike using it properly, the cpu never gets a rest with this problem.

U hope it is fixed early next week, Or it is likely to come off again :(

Same here. Early user, let it go, got the letter, re-upped -- and I canna stop it! ;-) Just this minute it is not hogging the system, but it is still ticking away in the BOINC Manager Tasks pane. I'm on a Powerbook G4 1.67.

The new SETI@Home under BOINC should never make your computer unusable. It runs in the lowest priority in Windows, so anything you do, or anything system related, takes precedence over the SETI app. If it does make your system unuseable, then there's something wrong with your settings or your system.

There's a setting in your account to make sure SETI doesn't run while on battery power. Did you set it?

Like the previous user I responded to in this thread, SETI@Home operates at a very low priority (I believe this to be true with the Mac OS as well as Windows). All your tasks should take precedence. If not, there must be something wrong with your hardware or settings.

The science applications running under BOINC, of which Seti is one, run at the Linux version of Low priority (nice 19). This one is even lower than the Windows priority can show.

You're missing the point. Preferences don't work!!!!!!!! The cpu is running at high speed and it's NOT at a low priority. Something is broken. We can't all be that stupid.
