OMG, this is hilarious. :) I had no idea that we were in competition for the highest ranking. This whole time I thought it was for a bunch of people to reach a common goal. I am so glad I don't belong to a team, that way I don't have anything to prove to anyone else or show justification for my time. LOL Just give me WU, and I'll make sure they're crunched.
You're right, this thread is funny. But just a perspective reminder regarding credits; if it weren't for the spirit of competition, not a single one of the available projects would be a fraction as far along as they are. Competition drives people, like myself, to build more machines, upgrade them to make them faster and spend hard earned money to keep them running 24/7. Lo and behold, more science is done for all. In addition, fanatics tend to spread "the word" more emphatically, in my experience, and more people join as a result.

I'm not slapping you, Mr. Andersen. I just felt the need to explain a different perspective on BOINC and crunching than you may have considered before.

Having lots of credits doesn't make anyone a better person than another. I'm on the record many times supporting that statement. But neither does crunching based on a philosophy of "I'm only in it for the science" make such a person more "pure" or "righteous".

Please understand, Mr. Andersen, this is not a personal attack nor is it a guess at your philosophies or motivations.

I see the whole DC endeavor in the same way as I do the Walk/run for juvenile diabetes that I paticipate in every year. Some go slow, some charge ahead, all do the best that they are able in order to contribute to a good cause. And in the end, everyone has a different reason for being there.

Crunch on -

If you click on the "in response to" message number, it'll take you back to that message where you can see who wrote it, and what message that one is in response to.

To MJKelleher: True, I must be blind. Funny thing is I must have seen that link a thousand times.
Still, a user name there would be nice. And user name in quotes.

I concur and no offense taken, Jim. Please call me Steve. I understand the comraderie that is formed by a team as I understand the need for competition. I'm sure it is a driving force for more and more crunching to be performed. Heck, I'll admit I've got 4 computers that I've pieced together to help in the effort. So in essence, I have my own team. ;)

Best Regards,
Steve

I think if a person clicks on the "Reply to this post" link at the bottom of each post, then it will automatically quote (like I did with yours).

Yes but if you don't quote thre's no way to know who someone is talking to, unless you've been following the entire thread.
And even with quotes, it's easy to get lost in a long thread. Some boards add the name of the person to a quote, like "xxx said: ....", etc. That's neat too.

Anyway, I didn't know if you were replying to me when you said:

That's why I posted my wishful thinking. :p

The he/she said addition would be a nice improvement. It would be alot easier than trying to match post numbers. That's why we have computers... hehehehe

My intentions were to point out how worried this individual was about ranking and such. Not to cause anger amongst anyone. I also go on vacation and shutdown my PCs, come home, power up, and continue on. I can understand his concern about RACs as associated with the team/individual progress. I hope for him and his team it doesn't affect it too much.

It's all good... :)

And, you show your credit and rank in your signature. Why is that? ;)

I'm the one that's always saying that "credits are the opiate of the masses", and I do usually speak against the people that seem to only crunch for the credit. But like Jim said, they are "necessary". It drives more people to crunch more and faster, and in the end science wins.

Like I said, in my opinion RAC is useless. But I do understand why a person could worry about it dropping, inside a team. Because if you go to a teams page, the ranking list that is displayed by default is orderer by RAC (you can re-arrange it by credits), and not by credit, thus a user with 1000 credits can appear higher in the ranking than a user with 1000000 credits, if the former has a higher RAC.

I guess I was sounding hipocritical. LMAO Oh, how we discover new things about ourselves daily.

p.s. I guess I put them there to show that I'm actively participating. Since I can't run BOINC on my government computer, I look for my graphic to show me that my computers are uploading during the day.

Bingo, I don't general show my sig, but I do if I'm answering a new user so that they know the advice they're seeing is from someone who's "been around" a while. Otherwise, I frequently look at my sig to make sure my machines are still working and to find out when I'm ready to break that new "milestone" I set for myself (I have one/two coming up shortly, hehe).

I'm going to stop working for a while and while I'm sitting around having fun my bank account balance will continue to drop. That will prove my point that banks and work suck.

They do, I just never saw it proved so eloquently.

Its not that, I'm just permanently disabled and so I don't work for anyone anymore, I'm My own boss as a result. It's not like I've never worked a day in My life and I've never been rich or well off or even close to It and neither were My parents.

If I turned My PCs off, I'd 1st do all My WU's in My cache then turn them off, Unless the power went out 1st of course.
