Message 381455 - Posted: 29 Jul 2006, 8:07:31 UTC

I was running the 4.x version of Boinc since the switch from the old seti classic and everything was running fine. Today I noticed One of my machines wasn't processing units so I checked the logs and discovered that there was an error then it kept defering downloads (since 4 May 2006).

No problem, I uninstalled Boinc and installed the latest and Greatest 5.4.9 version. I have been running it for several hours and I am already seeing the same error as was with the older version.

Below are clips from the log files from both versions:

I checked the Server Status page and it says everything is Hunky Dory with the servers. I checked the page that shows Unit info. and it says that the unit(s) were sent. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I have three other machines on my home network that connect/send/receive Units just fine. This one just hiccuped and is setting a record for hiccups.

(note* If someone can help me with using the Account Manager as well, that would be Peachy)...

I am having the same exact problem, let me know if you find a fix. Anyone?
I have a dedicated computer for seti and normally it runs fine. Two days ago the same exact thing happened to me.

Hello!

(...2006-07-29 03:46:33 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: http error...)

When it is a http error then I think it is a problem on your side...

Check your internet connection...

Greetings!

EDIT:
Restart Boinc or/ and your PC (maybe your router or modem too)...
I had the same problems with the http error, and this helped me...

Thanks for the suggestions!
But, I have already done the "basics" of troubleshooting ie. re-booting, testing ping/tracert, re-installing, etc., some of that is mentioned below (Heck! I've been in IT for more than 15 years I better do the "basics" before asking questions lol!), and then there is this line in the log:

"2006-07-29 03:46:34 [---] Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down."

...which suggests that it is communicating with BOINC/Seti, just not talking to the right server or having some sort of problem doing that.

Besides, I have 4 other computers on my network that can communicate with the BOINC/Seti servers just fine, and I can do other internet stuff on this particular computer just fine without error.

In my opinion, I think it might be something related to cached information about this computer ID on the server specifically.

Again, thanks for your suggestions!...

I'll let you know if I hear anything or discover the problem myself... frankly, it has me baffled. This computer has been humming along crunching Seti units and file sharing with WinMX for over 6 years now and suddenly it stopped downloading seti units.

Oh, and a note for those who are going to ask, I have 7GB of free space on this computer and yes, I checked a few minutes ago and the Latest version 5.4.9 has the same problem as the old version 4.x, here is the log continued from Last night:

Running file sharing programs...? Those can typically prevent SETI from downloading files properly (probably uses the same ports as SETI).

I had one person in my account using LimeWire and it kept causing BOINC to assign a new Computer ID everytime it contacted SETI@Home. Once I uninstalled LimeWire, the problem went away.

Sure, filesharing apps can co-exist for a while, so you may be thinking "but I've been doing this for a while now", but in my experience, it eventually causes problems sooner or later.

vortex, go to you "General Prefs" scroll all the way to bottom, change "skip image verification" to yes. Then click Update prefs. Then go to the "projects" tab on the boinc manager, highlight seti (right hand box), then click "update" radio button. see what happens.

If you've been in IT for 15 years, then you know we have to ask all of the stupid basic questions....

How does this computer connect to the internet? Cable modem through a router/firewall of some sort?

P.S. the "reference site" isn't at Berkeley.

Quite true. Even the brightest of minds can miss the easiest of options/solutions.

P.S. the "reference site" isn't at Berkeley.

The reference site mentioned is www.google.com
It's a check to see if BOINC can reach the internet. If it can't, it is a local network or firewall problem. If BOINC can reach the internet (Google), but not the project, it can be a project problem, or something on the route to the project. In the past this was an error 500. Remember those? ;-)

Thanks for the suggestion!
I'll try turning FS off once I am done with my current DL...

If you've been in IT for 15 years, then you know we have to ask all of the stupid basic questions....

True!
I just wanted to point out that I'm not a Noob to this computer biz.

How does this computer connect to the internet? Cable modem through a router/firewall of some sort?

-- Ned

P.S. the "reference site" isn't at Berkeley.

I am connected with cablemodem 8mb down/ 384kb up...100mb switch to 10mb hub to 100mb router to cablemodem.

Nothing has changed on this computer in 6 years except for windows updates (auto), and occasionally file sharing software updates which the last one I did for that was febuary 06.

p.s.
Thanks for Responding!...

I am having the same exact problem, let me know if you find a fix. Anyone?
I have a dedicated computer for seti and normally it runs fine. Two days ago the same exact thing happened to me.

Hey!

Just to let you know, I figured out what was causing my computer to stop downloading WU's.

As it turns out, it is a companion program to my file sharing program called PeerGuardian. PeerGuardian is supposed to help keep programs like those implemented by the RIAA from connecting to and seeing what I am sharing with the WinMX file sharing software. It, on occasion, updates a list of computers that are suspect RIAA computers and blocks access from those IP addresses. Apparently, at some point in May 2006, it got a list that included the Seti project servers and blocked access for those servers.

There is a way to manually remove names from that list, but I haven't had a chance to look into that yet...but when I stop running it, my downloads work.

Just wanted to let you know!...

There is a problem at berkeley. Everyone is getting error 403 on uploads since yesterday afternoon.

Which is probably a good thing since many WUs that were uploaded earlier failed to validate (as reported for example here). So I wouldn't be surpised if the uploading failures were on purpose to prevent more validation problems while they work out the problems with, and test, the validators (and to prevent the servers to fill up with results quickly which would happen if they only turned the validators off). All of this is pure speculation on my part of course.

And the ones I uploaded afterwards seem to validate well so far.

That is my experience, with validation and credit allocation.
It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues
