I was running the 4.x version of Boinc since the switch from the old seti classic and everything was running fine. Today I noticed One of my machines wasn't processing units so I checked the logs and discovered that there was an error then it kept defering downloads (since 4 May 2006). No problem, I uninstalled Boinc and installed the latest and Greatest 5.4.9 version. I have been running it for several hours and I am already seeing the same error as was with the older version. Below are clips from the log files from both versions: 4.x log 2006-07-29 01:15:18 [---] request_reschedule_cpus: result op 2006-07-29 01:16:54 [SETI@home] Unrecoverable error for result 07ap05aa.20582.31265.186078.3.148_1 (WU download error: couldn't get input files: <file_xfer_error> <file_name>07ap05aa.20582.31265.186078.3.148</file_name> <error_code>-114</error_code> <error_message>user requested transfer abort</error_message> </file_xfer_error> ) 2006-07-29 01:16:55 [SETI@home] Deferring communication with project for 58 seconds 2006-07-29 01:17:08 [---] request_reschedule_cpus: project op 2006-07-29 01:17:09 [SETI@home] Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi 2006-07-29 01:17:09 [SETI@home] Requesting 8640 seconds of work, returning 1 results 2006-07-29 01:17:10 [SETI@home] Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded 2006-07-29 01:17:11 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:17:32 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:17:32 [SETI@home] Backing off 1 minutes and 0 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:17:53 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:18:14 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:18:14 [SETI@home] Backing off 1 minutes and 0 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:19:15 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:19:37 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:19:37 [SETI@home] Backing off 1 minutes and 0 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:20:38 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:20:59 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:20:59 [SETI@home] Backing off 1 minutes and 0 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:21:59 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:22:20 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:22:20 [SETI@home] Backing off 1 minutes and 52 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:24:13 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:24:34 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:24:34 [SETI@home] Backing off 2 minutes and 25 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:27:00 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:27:21 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:27:21 [SETI@home] Backing off 5 minutes and 32 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:30:27 [---] request_reschedule_cpus: project op 2006-07-29 01:32:54 [SETI@home] Started download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 2006-07-29 01:33:15 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: -106 2006-07-29 01:33:15 [SETI@home] Backing off 16 minutes and 18 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 5.4.9 log 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] Starting BOINC client version 5.4.9 for windows_intelx86 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] libcurl/7.15.3 OpenSSL/0.9.8a zlib/1.2.3 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] Executing as a daemon 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] Data directory: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] BOINC is running as a service and as a non-system user. 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] No application graphics will be available. 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] Processor: 1 AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) MP 1500+ 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] Memory: 479.36 MB physical, 1.10 GB virtual 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] Disk: 111.79 GB total, 3.59 GB free 2006-07-29 01:54:07 [---] Version change (4.45.0 -> 5.4.9); I checked the Server Status page and it says everything is Hunky Dory with the servers. I checked the page that shows Unit info. and it says that the unit(s) were sent. Any ideas on what could be wrong? I have three other machines on my home network that connect/send/receive Units just fine. This one just hiccuped and is setting a record for hiccups. I am having the same exact problem, let me know if you find a fix. Anyone? I have a dedicated computer for seti and normally it runs fine. Two days ago the same exact thing happened to me. |

Hello! (...2006-07-29 03:46:33 [SETI@home] Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: http error...) When it is a http error then I think it is a problem on your side... Check your internet connection... Greetings! EDIT: Restart Boinc or/ and your PC (maybe your router or modem too)... I had the same problems with the http error, and this helped me... |

Hello! Thanks for the suggestions! But, I have already done the "basics" of troubleshooting ie. re-booting, testing ping/tracert, re-installing, etc., some of that is mentioned below (Heck! I've been in IT for more than 15 years I better do the "basics" before asking questions lol!), and then there is this line in the log: "2006-07-29 03:46:34 [---] Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down." ...which suggests that it is communicating with BOINC/Seti, just not talking to the right server or having some sort of problem doing that. Besides, I have 4 other computers on my network that can communicate with the BOINC/Seti servers just fine, and I can do other internet stuff on this particular computer just fine without error. In my opinion, I think it might be something related to cached information about this computer ID on the server specifically. Again, thanks for your suggestions!... I am having the same exact problem, let me know if you find a fix. Anyone? I'll let you know if I hear anything or discover the problem myself... frankly, it has me baffled. This computer has been humming along crunching Seti units and file sharing with WinMX for over 6 years now and suddenly it stopped downloading seti units. Oh, and a note for those who are going to ask, I have 7GB of free space on this computer and yes, I checked a few minutes ago and the Latest version 5.4.9 has the same problem as the old version 4.x, here is the log continued from Last night: 7/29/2006 6:56:37 AM|SETI@home|Started download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 6:56:58 AM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 7/29/2006 6:56:59 AM|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: http error 7/29/2006 6:56:59 AM|SETI@home|Backing off 1 hours, 39 minutes and 59 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 6:57:00 AM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. 7/29/2006 8:36:59 AM|SETI@home|Started download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 8:37:20 AM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 7/29/2006 8:37:21 AM|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: http error 7/29/2006 8:37:21 AM|SETI@home|Backing off 1 hours, 43 minutes and 39 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 8:37:22 AM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. 7/29/2006 10:21:00 AM|SETI@home|Started download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 10:21:22 AM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 7/29/2006 10:21:22 AM|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: http error 7/29/2006 10:21:22 AM|SETI@home|Backing off 3 hours, 35 minutes and 8 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 10:21:23 AM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. 7/29/2006 1:56:32 PM|SETI@home|Started download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 1:56:55 PM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 7/29/2006 1:56:55 PM|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86: http error 7/29/2006 1:56:55 PM|SETI@home|Backing off 3 hours, 36 minutes and 50 seconds on download of file 05my05aa.10710.27105.686074.3.86 7/29/2006 1:56:56 PM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down. Running file sharing programs...? Those can typically prevent SETI from downloading files properly (probably uses the same ports as SETI). I had one person in my account using LimeWire and it kept causing BOINC to assign a new Computer ID everytime it contacted SETI@Home. Once I uninstalled LimeWire, the problem went away. Sure, filesharing apps can co-exist for a while, so you may be thinking "but I've been doing this for a while now", but in my experience, it eventually causes problems sooner or later. |

vortex, go to you "General Prefs" scroll all the way to bottom, change "skip image verification" to yes. Then click Update prefs. Then go to the "projects" tab on the boinc manager, highlight seti (right hand box), then click "update" radio button. see what happens. tony |

If you've been in IT for 15 years, then you know we have to ask all of the stupid basic questions.... How does this computer connect to the internet? Cable modem through a router/firewall of some sort? -- Ned P.S. the "reference site" isn't at Berkeley. |

P.S. the "reference site" isn't at Berkeley. The reference site mentioned is www.google.com It's a check to see if BOINC can reach the internet. If it can't, it is a local network or firewall problem. If BOINC can reach the internet (Google), but not the project, it can be a project problem, or something on the route to the project. In the past this was an error 500. Remember those? ;-) |

If you've been in IT for 15 years, then you know we have to ask all of the stupid basic questions.... True! I just wanted to point out that I'm not a Noob to this computer biz. How does this computer connect to the internet? Cable modem through a router/firewall of some sort? I am connected with cablemodem 8mb down/ 384kb up...100mb switch to 10mb hub to 100mb router to cablemodem. Nothing has changed on this computer in 6 years except for windows updates (auto), and occasionally file sharing software updates which the last one I did for that was febuary 06. p.s. Thanks for Responding!... You only live once, Live It Up!... |

I am having the same exact problem, let me know if you find a fix. Anyone? Hey! Just to let you know, I figured out what was causing my computer to stop downloading WU's. As it turns out, it is a companion program to my file sharing program called PeerGuardian. PeerGuardian is supposed to help keep programs like those implemented by the RIAA from connecting to and seeing what I am sharing with the WinMX file sharing software. It, on occasion, updates a list of computers that are suspect RIAA computers and blocks access from those IP addresses. Apparently, at some point in May 2006, it got a list that included the Seti project servers and blocked access for those servers. There is a way to manually remove names from that list, but I haven't had a chance to look into that yet...but when I stop running it, my downloads work. Just wanted to let you know!... I can download but not upload any work units have done the basics There is a problem at berkeley. Everyone is getting error 403 on uploads since yesterday afternoon. https://youtu.be/iY57ErBkFFE #Texit Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016. Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power. |

There is a problem at berkeley. Everyone is getting error 403 on uploads since yesterday afternoon.Which is probably a good thing since many WUs that were uploaded earlier failed to validate (as reported for example here). So I wouldn't be surpised if the uploading failures were on purpose to prevent more validation problems while they work out the problems with, and test, the validators (and to prevent the servers to fill up with results quickly which would happen if they only turned the validators off). All of this is pure speculation on my part of course. |

Server is back up, and accepting uploads. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

And the ones I uploaded afterwards seem to validate well so far. |

Server is back up, and accepting uploads. That is my experience, with validation and credit allocation. It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |
