Michael J. Fox appears in ads touting Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate

October 23, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) - His body visibly racked by tremors, actor Michael J. Fox speaks out for Missouri Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill in a television ad that promotes her support for embryonic stem cell research.

"As you might know I care deeply about stem cell research," says Fox, 45, who has struggled with Parkinson's disease for more than a decade. "In Missouri you can elect Claire McCaskill, who shares my hope for cures."

McCaskill has made support for the research a key part of her campaign to unseat Senator Jim Talent. The Republican incumbent opposes the research as unethical, saying it destroys human embryos.

The new ad debuted prominently Saturday night during Game 1 of the World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers and will continue airing statewide this week, a campaign spokeswoman said.

Debate over stem cell research looms large in the state, where voters are considering a ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to protect all federally allowed forms of the research, including embryonic stem cell research.

"Unfortunately, Senator Jim Talent opposes expanding stem cell research," Fox says in the 30-second spot. "Senator Talent even wanted to criminalize the science that gives us a chance for hope."

Talent's campaign called the ad a false attack.

"Senator Talent supports medical research including stem cell research that doesn't involve cloning or destroying a human embryo," said Talent spokesman Rich Chrismer.

Earlier this year, Talent withdrew his support for a Senate bill that would ban all embryonic stem cell research and impose a million-dollar fine and jail sentence on violators. But he opposes the Missouri ballot initiative, claiming it would "make cloning human life at the earliest stage a constitutional right."

McCaskill hopes to get a boost from aligning herself with support for the ballot measure, which recent polls show has the support of 58 per cent of likely voters. Backers of the measure have raised nearly US$29 million toward its passage, the costliest political campaign in Missouri history.

Fox's ad urges voters that "what you do in Missouri matters to millions of Americans. Americans like me." The ad ends with a picture of McCaskill and her voice approving the message.

The Canadian-born Fox became an American citizen in 2000 and has been politically active for Democratic causes. He campaigned for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race and lobbied Congress to lift President George W. Bush's restrictions on funding for stem cell research, which holds promise in the search to cure diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Fox hosted a $500-a-plate event fundraiser in St. Louis last month that raised $200,000 for McCaskill's campaign.

NeoCon Republican mouth piece and known drug abuser has no shame.

Pinko Democrat mouthpiece and known liar has no shame.

More BS political rhetoric.

Somehow Michael J. Fox is immune from criticism for his political views because he has a disease?

Point taken...political extremes are none linear...they meet up and are usually just as repulsive. But that does not negate Mr. Fox's message or disease.

There's a big difference between criticizing the viewpoint/message and accusing Mr. Fox of faking/exaggerating.

Mr. Fox has admitted that he was overmedicated to exaggerate his symptoms and that he has not read the state Constitutional ammendment he was supporting which, despite the name, is actually a pro-cloning ammendment. Mr. Fox has also neglected to mention that there is NO promising results in the fetal stem cell research to date, but a great deal of promise and existing procedures using adult stem cells.

He did not overmedicated to exaggerate his symptoms. Watch the interview if you haven't seen it. Watch it again if you have.

Has Parkinson's ever affected you, a family member, friend or acquaintance?
My great grandmother had Parkinson's. Though she died when I was a young child, around 1973, I can remember some of her symptoms. Perhaps Limbaugh has never personally known someone with Parkinson's?

Rush Limbaugh has already admitted he was wrong about Mr. Fox and apologized. Fox has said that without his meds he wouldn't even be able to speak. He would know and I believe him.

Sure. But for public figures like Messrs. Fox and Limbaugh, (and Moore and Coulter, et cetera) who have taken partisan political positions, even accusing them of faking and exaggerating is fair game.

Fox admitted that he played with his meds and Limbaugh stands by his statements, which were factually correct.

Everything regarding the 'government' is 'political'. But would you think it would be fair game if Limbaugh had accused Christopher Reeve of exaggerating his symptoms when he spoke in favor of stemcell research? No of course not. That would be sick. For Limbaugh to make his comments about Fox is insensitive at best, and repugnant otherwise. The fact that Fox didn't lash back such as, "Rush would know all about prescription drugs..." shows he has a lot more class.

Nvertheless, Limbaugh's statements, by Fox's own admission, were correct. His statements about the total ineffectiveness of fetal stem cell research results were also correct. And I am (quite insensitively) livid with Fox for two reasons. First, he intentionally lied about the political positions of both the candidates he supports and the candidates he opposes. Second, he knowingly lied about the state and [lack of] promise of fetal stem cell research.

I do not have family members with Parkinsons, I have a sister with a severe seisure disorder who is also livid about Fox playing the "look at me, I'm such a victim you just have to believe what I say" role. She thinks he should be ashamed for dishonestly playing against people's compassion.

The first missions to space also failed. Maybe we should have stopped trying.

Salk's first attempts at a polio vaccination caused the infection. Maybe he should have stopped trying.

And on and on and on.... it's called scientific and medical research. And like with all research that's done properly it takes many years to develope and bear fruit.

If someone actually believed that Mr. Reeve was exaggerating his symptoms, then it's fair game. Let's face it, at face value, using Mr. Reeve or Mr. Fox is a cynical (and effective) tool to manipulate voters.

For Limbaugh to make his comments about Fox is insensitive at best, and repugnant otherwise. The fact that Fox didn't lash back such as, "Rush would know all about prescription drugs..." shows he has a lot more class.

Insensitive to whom? Mr. Fox? So what?

Like I said, he isn't immune to criticism when he takes a partisan political position simply because he has a disease, neither is it wrong or insensitive to suggest that people who use their debilitating disease to sway voters have something to gain by doing so.
